Fossil
Regional Cuisine, Seasonal Cuisine · Bib
€€
The name "Fossil" was not simply plucked out of thin air: This restaurant is actually located in a Muschelkalk limestone wine cellar dating back to 1870. At the entrance on the historical Kellerplatz, you are greeted by a plant-filled Mediterranean-style terrace. Then take just a few steps down, walk past the open kitchen and into the bright and imposing barrel vault, which makes for an enchanting setting. Chef-patron Thomas Daniel Pugel has been cooking here since 2015. Between noon and 9pm, he serves up regional and seasonal cuisine that is rooted in Austrian tradition yet incorporates moder

Greisslerei beim Taubenkobel
French Contemporary, Regional Cuisine · ★★ Michelin

Barbara Eselböck and Alain Weissgerber offer a delightful alternative to Taubenkobel restaurant with this charming eatery located in the adjacent building. The atmosphere is friendly, relaxed and completely unpretentious, and the food is simply delicious. Select ingredients go into flavoursome dishes such as Alsace-style snails, Wiener schnitzel and gnocchi with fresh truffles. The interior is wonderfully cosy and has a vintage feel to it, with charming decorative touches and shelves displaying house-made and Pannonian food items, as well as regional wines. By the entrance, there is a counter

A tip to start off with: in summer, don't miss out on the terrace with a view of the Danube – it's idyllic! That's not to say the kitchen doesn't also deliver its fair share of delights: the beautifully prepared regional dishes are packed with flavour, from Wiener schnitzel (made with veal), potatoes and lamb's lettuce salad, to delicious ravioli or Arctic char fillet, to 24hr-braised ox cheek. Be sure to try the house-made vinegar-based lemonades, too. Hot meals served throughout the day.

This lovingly restored 16C farmhouse first became an inn in 1860. The bright, welcoming and modern interior tastefully combines historical elements and decorative art. Tables on the courtyard terrace, shaded by trees and shrubs, are also popular. The kitchen team keeps things seasonal and regional – honest food plain and simple. There are two set menus to choose from, but you can also mix and match à la carte. Renowned for its offal dishes, the restaurant also serves unconventional specialities such as beaver meat, horse tongue or pig's ear, along with the signature "poularde en vessie" (chick

Landgasthaus Schiller
Seasonal Cuisine, Regional Cuisine

Steeped in tradition and family-run since 1908, this country inn sees chef-patron Gerhard Schiller serving up ambitious seasonal regional cuisine with modern influences. You can choose to have four, six or eight courses of the tasting menu or simply order the dishes à la carte. Tempting examples include Attersee tench with yellow carrot, coriander and mustard seed, or Leithaberg venison saddle with potato roulade, green beans and loquat. Classics such as Zwiebelrostbraten (fried beef and onions in gravy) or chanterelle goulash are also available. The thoughtfully curated wine list homes in on

Zur Dankbarkeit

Steeped in tradition, this restaurant in the centre of Podersdorf has been run by the same family for four generations. Their ties to the region are reflected in delicious dishes made with ingredients from the owner's native Burgenland. The handwritten menu features classics such as veal liver and schnitzel, as well as options including pan-fried Arctic char fillet with pak choi and celeriac cream. In summer, the courtyard behind the house is especially inviting, with a spacious gravel terrace shaded by trees. The estate's own wines are well represented on the menu. The establishment also runs

Zum Gogosch

Incorporated into the Bio-Landgut Esterhazy, an estate with its own farm, this restaurant has a laser-like focus on regional and seasonal ingredients. Local produce, some of it organic, is used in pleasingly uncomplicated yet sophisticated dishes, for example wild cheese sausage, baked schnitzel, organic Angus beef steak and venison carpaccio. In addition to the well-curated à la carte menu, a five-course set menu (dubbed "Hofmenü") is available on Fri and Sat evenings. Tables are arranged in a converted stable that has been beautifully modernised – the ceiling with beams is lovely. The terrac
