Chifa

chinese, peruvian · Bib

"Chifa" is a term referring to a delicious mashup of Peruvian and Chinese cuisines. If the green velvet chairs and zebra-print walls aren't enough of a clue, look to the team who isn't shy about anything. The succinct menu pulls from family recipes and childhood memories to pack in flavor at every turn. Start easy with Japanese sea bream soaking in an orange and lime sauce, before moving on to char siu, starring pork cheek finished on a wood-fire grill—it's the stuff of barbecue dreams. Your visit would be incomplete without the lomo saltado, featuring tender chunks of filet mignon and sauteed

Villa's Tacos

Mexican · Bib

Sweet smoke from a roadside taco stand blows across the Highland Park parking lot, but the crowd gathered in front of Chef Victor Villa’s taqueria doesn’t budge. This brick-and-mortar marks a milestone for a chef who first started serving out of his grandmother’s house. The signature queso taco is instantly recognizable, built on a blue corn masa tortilla stacked with refried beans, onion, cilantro, guacamole, cotija cheese, crema and a melted skirt of Monterey Jack. Variations with asada and chorizo are favorites, with vegan options on offer as well. Colorful, messy and filling, these tacos t

Morihiro

Japanese, Sushi · ★ Michelin

$$$$

A longtime fixture in LA's sushi culture, Chef Morihiro Onodera now operates from a more expansive, contemporary space that reflects both his history and his ambitions. Along with an à la carte menu, the restaurant offers an omakase experience that blends traditional sushi counter dining with subtle references to cha-kaiseki, beginning with a sequence of composed dishes before moving into nigiri. Seafood is primarily sourced from Japan, and the rice is milled in-house, underscoring a focus on ingredient integrity and control. Handmade ceramics crafted by the chef himself remain part of the pre

Zhengyalov Hatz

How many leafy greens and herbs can you name? At this simple, no-frills Armenian bakery in Glendale, watch seasoned chefs knead, roll out and griddle a specialty flatbread stuffed with more than a dozen chopped varietals. It’s as if they’ve been doing this their entire lives, working with the likes of sorrel, spinach, scallions and beet leaves to make a tight, forest-green lining that is at once sweet, sour, sharp and refreshing. It’s easy enough to eat one for a snack and several for a meal.

Carnes Asadas Pancho Lopez

Mexican · Bib

Humble doesn’t even begin to describe this open-air restaurant, which has no walls and is seemingly built out of corrugated metal. But what comes out of the kitchen is anything but simple. In quiet Lincoln Heights, find a limited menu that excels in tender, stewed meats and soulful soups. The chef mines the memories of his hometown of Jalisco with carne en su jugo, a superb, meaty soup made from tomatillos, bacon, pinto beans and beef. Birria en consommé is another warming, brothy hit, packing in more delicacy and nuance than the typical effort. There must be tacos, of course, and tortillas ar

Adana Restaurant

Note: This restaurant is temporarily closed.Come with a group and order with abandon. The food here is so good that it will be hard to hold back. This dining room manages to be both modest and ornate, filled with large round tables covered in purple linen, alongside walls of gold-framed photos and murals. The vibe is so open and friendly that you might see cheese plates being enthusiastically shared among neighboring diners. The cooking is as honest as the servers, who are happy to direct you on how to order best. Dolmeh and chicken kebabs with stewed sour cherries and an irresistible yogurt s

Pine & Crane

Find this laid-back little café opposite the pedestrian plaza, Sunset Triangle. The dining room is a rustic blend of exposed brick, concrete floors and varnished wood tables. As casual as the vibe may seem, this is a serious kitchen dedicated to carefully prepared Taiwanese cooking. Vegetarian variations on classics such as mapo tofu and dumplings impress, as well as sides like the lotus root or seaweed salad. The three-cup Jidori chicken is its own simmering feast in a clay pot rich with dark meat. Other highlights include basil eggplant and twice-cooked pork.

Kismet

This enduringly hip Los Feliz favorite is best experienced with friends, but we can’t help feeling a tiny bit selfish when the chicken and pine nut pies wrapped in flaky phyllo arrive or when oyster mushroom skewers with a creamy onion and cashew sauce land on the table. And the Persian crispy rice with egg yolks? Do we have to share this one too? Such is the enduring charm of this Middle Eastern hotspot that prioritizes seasonal vegetables and bright flavors. Nothing feels heavy, ever, and even the most familiar of ingredients can surprise. The staff is equally charming, as cool as the cucumb
