Established in 1932 on the outskirts of Saverne, Kasbür has been linked to the Kieffer family for three generations. The restaurant is named after the great-grandfather, a farmer who made his cheeses here, and it is Yves Kieffer, his great-grandson, who brought this imposing building into the modern era. The elegant contemporary dining room looking out onto the lush Alsace countryside is run with a great sense of hospitality by Béatrice, his wife. Previously Le Staeffele, an institution in Saverne, this place has been taken over by a small, enthusiastic team. It has an intimate feel, with 10 tables at which diners pick from the à la carte menu or opt for the ambitious tasting menu. The name refers to morels – these mushrooms are always on the menu, prepared in different ways depending on the season for a wonderfully indulgent interlude. The lunch set menu is good value for money.

This half-timbered farmhouse is brimming with Alsatian charm! Pretty regional decor and (very) local specialities: bibalaskas with smoked ham, bacon, garlic and parsley ; veal fleischnacka with mushrooms and cream ; sourdough tartes flammées…and the unmissable “real crème caramel like my grandmother used to make”.

Tucked away in the countryside, this tastefully appointed contemporary inn draws foodies likes bees to honey. The menu adds a tasty new twist to Alsace classics thanks to meticulously selected seasonal ingredients. For example, the goat’s cheese comes from the next-door cheese dairy run by the chef’s brother. The egg parfait ensconced in a crunchy nest and served with a frothy truffle-flavoured celery sauce is a culinary masterpiece and the nostalgic banana split is to die for!

In a modern brasserie setting, the chef rustles up traditional flavoursome food that spans the full gamut of classic French cuisine: eggs meurette, house smoked salmon, vol au vent and Simmental hanger steak with marrow bone… Given the quality of the food, it is hardly surprising that the restaurant is frequently fully booked.

Called ID in tribute to its charismatic owners, Isabelle and Denis Vetter, this restaurant is tucked away in a plush 18C edifice that boasts a grandiose period staircase. A muted contemporary interior sets the stage for a seasonal score that alternates between bold daring compositions and regressive family favourites. The desserts are in the same vein, illustrated by a refreshing mint-spiked rhubarb soup or Alsace saffron-flavoured crème.
