Zimmerl
Creative, Modern Cuisine · ★ Michelin
€€€€
An interesting concept, of the kind you might expect to find in a big city rather than in the tranquil Waldviertel region. The design is upscale and chic, with nice low lighting and just four tables making for an intimate atmosphere (the name "Zimmerl" is very apt). The set menu comprises 23 small dishes, so you need to allow plenty of time – but the 4hr or so flies by, because the cuisine, peppered with sophisticated contrasts and original ideas, simply makes for a fun experience! The dishes are complex and packed with flavour – think fresh Tyrolean Alpine prawns made into a delicate, creamy

Heurigenhof Bründlmayer
Classic French, Contemporary · ★ Michelin
€€€€
In a handsome Renaissance building in the heart of this tranquil wine-growing town, chef Matthias Schütz presents classic French cuisine with modern accents. High-quality ingredients go into flavoursome dishes such as lake trout with kohlrabi, buttermilk, macadamia nut and chives, or turbot with artichoke, tatsoi, vadouvan, salted lemon and jus corsé. The outstanding wine list features over 500 labels from Europe and overseas. Naturally, the Bründlmayer estate is also well represented, and its wines are frequently recommended by the glass. The service team is friendly, attentive and profession

The location here is truly amazing, within the grounds of Třeboň’s wonderfully restored castle, which you should definitely explore before or after your meal (there are shops, cafés etc). Or soak up the peace and quiet at the lake as you take in the view. The restaurant specialises in fish – try the carp chips (kapří hranolky) with mushroom and dill sauce, for which they are famous. Some of the fish on the menu come from the lake. The service is attentive and friendly. In winter you can sit in the elegant ‘Šupinka’, in summer the somewhat simpler ‘Šupina’ opposite is open - this is where the l

This lovingly maintained 1912 estate has been in the same family for four generations. The restaurant is divided into two parts: a traditional dining room with a sense of history, and a bright, modern annexe with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the lovely garden and its splendid terrace. The kitchen team rustles up fabulous Austrian dishes such as the classic pike dumplings or minced veal butter schnitzel, not to mention the delicious plum dumplings. The Jamek name is also renowned for exceptional Rieslings and Grüner Veltliners.

A centuries-old wine farm has been transformed into the beautiful Holzapfel winery estate, featuring a small boutique hotel, an inviting restaurant and a gorgeous terrace set within an arcaded courtyard. The kitchen team serves up dishes with a strong regional character that are distinguished by excellent craftsmanship and flavour. Opt for the set menu or order à la carte. The estate's own wines are available to pair with your meal. The front-of-house team is friendly, attentive and always on hand.

Here in the natural surroundings of the Waldviertel region, you can enjoy not only the beautiful view of the surrounding area but also the ambitious cuisine of Michael Kolm and his team. The dishes are rooted in the region but with a cosmopolitan edge, as demonstrated by creations such as veal fillet, ravioli, wild broccoli, and hamachi, rutabaga, avocado. You can choose between the set menus – "Bärentrail Menu" and vegetarian "Animal-Friendly Menu" – and à la carte options. The service team is pleasant, cordial and competent – the first appetisers are plated in the restaurant itself. The brig

Restaurant Nigl

Upon arrival, you are greeted by a sensational backdrop – let your gaze linger on the Nigl family vineyard and the vine-covered slopes, with the castle ruins, Burgruine Senftenberg, looming above. In addition to the wine estate with its delightful courtyard, a hotel and a shop, there is a charming restaurant. Chef Bertram Nigl presents a menu featuring regional and French classics, such as "Grandma Nigl's traditional Waldviertel-style Grammelknödel (potato dumpling stuffed with greaves)" and "braised beef roulade with Schupfnudeln (potato dumplings), Brussels sprouts and carrots". A pleasant atmosphere awaits you in this lovely inn in the middle of the village. The comfortable interior dotted with modern decorative touches feels friendly, and service is attentive. In summer, the pretty garden terrace is delightful. The delicious food is regional and seasonal, with options ranging from classics such as cordon bleu or Backhendl (Viennese breaded fried chicken) to the "Essenz:Menu", a four- to six-course set menu, from which you can also choose à la carte.
