Steakhouse

$$$$

Chef Ryan Fancher's modern steakhouse is on the grounds of Hotel San Luis Obispo, in a separate building connected by a walkway. The hotel's contemporary Southwest vibe lives on in the restaurant. Design details, like butterscotch leather banquettes, a stacked brick wall divider, and teal-blue tiles, enhance the X factor. Staff are well-informed, so let them steer you through the menu. Start with such comfort fare as savory goat cheese croquettes with sweet lavender honey before embarking on the main event—charred steaks and sides of creamed spinach topped with onion rings. On the same property

Nate's on Marsh

American, Italian

$$$

This affable spot is just outside of downtown San Luis Obispo. It's no surprise that Nate's on Marsh feels very welcoming—it's set within a converted residence. Inside is just as darling with palm-printed wallpaper and a Western/equestrian theme. Nate Long is the consummate host and the service is exceptionally warm, though it certainly doesn't hurt that the menu is loaded with classics and riffs on favorites that will have you coming back for more. Try the La Scala salad, a blend of shredded iceberg, salami, artichoke hearts, sun-dried tomatoes, and crispy chickpeas, all tossed in a red wine

Ember

Californian

$$$

Ember was at the forefront of open-fire cooking on the Central Coast when it opened, and this Arroyo Grande charmer still hasn’t lost its spark. Its inviting industrial-rustic interior remains a fitting backdrop for the restaurant’s heartfelt and approachable cooking. The contemporary menu leans into comforting flavors and wood-fired touches, from summer squash bruschetta layered with zucchini ribbons, roasted torpedo onions, ricotta-goat cheese, caramelized fennel aioli and mint on grilled walnut bread, to staples like the grilled under-a-brick chicken and the towering 50-layer lasagna.
