Chef Matt Baker is luring diners to Ivy City with this gorgeous spot, which transforms local products into modern, deeply complex items. The décor pays homage to the place's industrial bones with exposed brick and stark walls, softened by greenery. Fine service and an open kitchen enhance the appeal.Set menus are available with three, four, and six courses to choose from, along with some supplements. Wonderful yellowfin sashimi comes with a complex soy vinaigrette while the tagliatelle with sweetbreads in a pork and pancetta ragu with brown butter cream and sun chokes is a standout. For desser

Ivy City Smokehouse

Seafood, Barbecue · Bib

Lucky are the eaters who make their way to this unique seafood smokehouse. Inside the warehouse-like space, a daily market and state-of-the-art smoker reside at street level. Above this, find a tavern-like restaurant with a large, open-air rooftop. The fish is fresh, the staff is especially friendly, and the vibe is irresistible with occasional live music. Opt for the smokehouse appetizer which comes with your choice of smoked fish (perhaps Pacific Northwest-style honey hot smoked salmon, North Carolina rainbow trout, or Great Lake whitefish salad) paired with a bagel and served with chive cre

With its seamless blend of indoor and outdoor spaces, this is a shining beacon amid high-rises, restaurants and stores. Donning that requisite brick walls and farmhouse vibe, the former warehouse feels glam yet spartan—with a stainless-steel kitchen, chrome accents and an impressive glass-encased wine cellar. Such a feel-good sense extends to the staff, who clearly like working here as much as diners enjoy lingering over meals.Chef/owner Nicholas Stefanelli's Puglian heritage comes through in the menu. His dishes hit all the right notes, balancing playful with serious elements, as in the turbo

This concept from Chef Juan Manuel Barrientos can be found adjacent to Union Market's La Cosecha. Presentation is the cornerstone here, with an admirable level of showmanship, and dishes embody a love letter to the chef's native Colombia. This is deeply personal cooking, with the chef utilizing Colombian ingredients in dishes that share history and purpose. Two set menus are served throughout the restaurant's two dining rooms. From the snacks to the corn broth that makes you rethink this staple to the chocotherapy dessert, this dining experience is seamless. The ingredients are Colombian, many

Rasika vets, Dante Datta and Chef Suresh Sundas, are behind this much-anticipated Indian operation. The corner space, flaunting a windowed façade and white-ringed Sanskrit logo, is an instant attention grabber. Weather permitting, a large sidewalk increases the dining capacity.Inside, at the bar-counter set abuzz with vibrant tunes, the kitchen team takes classic Indian cuisine in a novel direction. Is that blue cheese on your tandoor-grilled chicken kebabs? Yes, indeed. Matched with sour cherry reduction and cashews, it's as enticing a preparation as the boldly spiced minced bison momos. Nari

Maketto

Credit to chef-owner Erik Bruner-Yang and his team for keeping it fresh, as it were. On ever-changing H Street, this long-favored restaurant at first looks like a clothing store with its glittering display cases lined with chic merch. More impressive, though, is what’s on the menu: A diverse, ambitious, and consistently satisfying roster of dishes inspired by flavors from across Asia. Everything here is designed to share, starting with Cantonese-style shrimp dumplings dressed in Cambodian fish sauce and garnished with dill. What’s next? A Thai-spicy riff on pork laab with bone marrow? An impos

Stellina Pizzeria

Pizza, Italian · Bib

Self-appointed as a "Neo-Neapolitan" style pizzeria, this is a bright spot with a line of of colorful tiles, red stools and a blazing open kitchen equipped with—you guessed it—a wood-burning oven. You may even see Chef/owner Matteo Venini manning this mighty machine, as he is known to turn out pies faster than you can say Margherita. It's simple counter service here, yet those crusts are anything but—imagine a series of well-blistered and delightfully chewy pies, like the savory coppa and creamy Taleggio, drizzled with olive oil and sprinkled with fresh thyme. The pizza is served whole, but yo

Toki Underground

Japanese, Ramen · Bib

You’ll go up the stairs, not down to Toki Underground, which shares the same front door as The Pug Bar. Once inside, notice raw wood beams, walls plastered with stickers and scribble, as well as dangling Christmas lights. No longer requiring a queue, it's strictly reservations only here, where counter seats turn quickly and you have slightly more than one hour to slurp to your heart's content. Fried chicken steamed buns, delicately fried enoki mushrooms, or pork dumplings are a good way to start things off, but it's really all about ramen. There are five selections, all freshly made and bursti
