Atelier Crenn

Contemporary, French · ★★★ Michelin

$$$$

This singular atelier is where Chef Dominique Crenn established her lofty reputation, creating an inspired culinary style that combines her upbringing in Brittany with her present-day evolution in California. The pescatarian menu skillfully weds a panoply of delectable sauces and impeccably prepared seafood, a true testament to Crenn’s mastery of French cuisine—and a loaf of exquisite brioche from her grandmother’s recipe drives the point home. But a thoughtfully modern sensibility is also evident; produce sourced from partner Bleu Belle Farm in Sonoma lends lightness and balance, resulting in

Nisei

Japanese, Contemporary · ★ Michelin

$$$$

"Nisei" refers to the American-born children of Japanese immigrants, which Chef David Yoshimura is; and the synthesis of that heritage forms the basis of this cuisine. Dining is taken seriously here, where the service team is personable and the chef is especially engaging. The kitchen employs both boldness and subtlety in their cooking, which abounds with personality and technical finesse, and the tasting menu is equal parts tradition and invention. Savor a dish of buckwheat infused potato tartlet with date miso puree and chicory or the nori maki filled with silken tofu and Blue Lake lava bean

Hyunyoung and Junsoo Bae have ample fine dining experience but were inspired to strike out on their own to fill what they saw as a void in San Francisco's Korean restaurant scene. The result is this tasting menu that draws upon familiar flavors but sets itself apart with a sense of refined simplicity.Pop a golden puff of sweet potato pancake with a dollop of kaluga caviar straight into your mouth for a delicious bite. Then, scallop mousseline with smoked sable fish wrapped in savoy cabbage is enhanced with a beurre blanc ramped up with Kimpo Yeaju. Finally, a bowl filled with a fluffy pile of

Acquerello

Italian, Contemporary · ★★ Michelin

With its signature A-frame ceiling and luxuriously warm furnishings, this dining room has been Chef Suzette Gresham’s home since 1989. The cooking remains top rate, promising finesse and bold flavors in equal measure. Handmade pastas like their rabbit marubini in a prosciutto brodo are a particular highlight here, as are dishes like Spanish mackerel with asparagus. Sweets are a notable strength, down to the very last few bites when one of the best mignardises carts in town rolls up stacked with chocolates, pâtes de fruits, and caramels rolls. Speaking of bests, friendly sommeliers are essentia

Le Comptoir at Bar Crenn

Contemporary, French · ★ Michelin

$$$$

Tucked next door to Atelier Crenn, this counter experience offers an elegant interpretation of bar dining. Seated at a sleek marble countertop, a select handful of guests per evening receive a tasting menu reflecting Crenn’s pescatarian, French and Californian cuisine. Diners get a bit of a show, with the bulk of the courses being plated with brio before their eyes. The beverage program is thoughtful, with pairings well-matched to the intricate creations, such as a buckwheat pretzel accompanied by mustard, caviar and mornay sauce, or ricotta-filled agnolotti with brown butter, truffle and a red

Offering what may well be the Bay Area’s most creative and ambitious take on brunch, this disarming passion project from co-owners Ollie Liedags and Rachel Sillcocks gets its extra shine from the pair’s extensive fine dining experience — each also contributed a grandparent for the restaurant’s name. The hospitality is cheery and warm, matched by a winsome space that calls to mind a modernist diner, and happily the cuisine is every bit as finely tuned. There is nothing precious or manicured about the cooking here. It is often bold and brash, a total riot of flavors mixed with stellar ingredient

Contemporary, Californian · ★★★ Michelin

To mark its 20th anniversary, Chef Michael and Lindsay Tusk have given their restaurant a luxe refresh that has reinvigorated the early 1900's Jackson Square setting. The commitment to seasonality and locality is striking, with much of the produce sourced from their partner farm. Dinner here celebrates the season with an array of elegant presentations. A small bowlful of gently cooked first-of-the-season peas are served in a silky broth brimming with flavor from guanciale and Tomales Bay clam. Pasta has always been a highlight here, and the agnolotti filled with white asparagus is no exception

Nari

Thai, Contemporary · ★ Michelin

This sleek retreat located within Hotel Kabuki delivers a one-two punch with a dramatic setting and accomplished cooking. Chef Pim Techamuanvivit’s personality and laser-focused palate come through in dishes that utilize fantastic Californian ingredients through a distinct, contemporary Thai lens. Dishes are family style, albeit with a touch of refinement. Intensely aromatic curries achieve a marvelous complexity, as in a brick red bumbai curry with crispy fried eggplant, served with an ethereally flaky roti bread. Crispy shallots and peanuts are a clever addition to bright citrus in yum sum-o
