The room is decidedly casual, and diners are welcome to come as they are, but there's no mistaking the passion of this kitchen. They make deft use of local ingredients with a distinctly Southwestern palette of flavors that draws from Mexican and Southern traditions, while maintaining a contemporary, global sophistication. The tasting menu is carefully attuned to the seasons, and refinement is balanced with a sense of whimsy. Hiramasa with caramelized apple is a clever first bite that teases what's to come, from a wood-fired grouper with a creamy curry to wagyu tartare, ribeye and rib cap with

Craft Omakase
Japanese, Sushi · ★ Michelin
$$$$
Discreetly tucked away in Rosedale, Craft Omakase has a lounge up front with a dining room and counter in back. It is here where guests wisely place their faith in the hands of Chefs Charlie Wang and Nguyen Nguyen who dole out an impressive procession of nigiri and other bites. Their creative omakase doesn't shy away from embellishment, yet it's done with restraint and allows the fish to shine. An abundance of product hails from Japan, and the fish is skillfully handled. Preparations like an aguachile of pink shrimp with sweet potato or crudo of hamachi with a creamy grapefruit sauce with red

Found on the second floor of a North Austin professional building, Tare's odd location makes for a curious first impression. There is no signage, but an attendant is stationed out front to welcome diners before each seating. Once inside, the space is attractive with a dark granite counter. Chef Michael Carranza and his small team prepare a kappo-style experience, and the foundation of the meal is an array of embellished nigiri. Fish is sourced from Japan and dry-aged in-house, but tuna from Spain and ocean trout from New Zealand may also make an appearance. There is a creative streak with a Te

Chef Ling Qi Wu owns several restaurants around town, but here at Ling Kitchen, she invites guests to experience something entirely different. There is just one seating per evening at this dinner party-style experience where about 20 guests are invited to join her in the kitchen for a tasting menu of elevated Chinese and Asian cuisine. Before long, the mood is convivial as guests chat over dishes like a trio of dumplings with animal shapes and exquisite fillings such as steamed lobster, turmeric-tinted beef, and crawfish with XO sauce. Pan-seared pork belly is beautifully presented wrapped in

Sisters Reyna and Maritza Vazquez are well known for their bright blue Veracruz All Natural juice and taco trucks, and this brick-and-mortar spot in Mueller builds off their success (the decor even incorporates their recognizable blue color). The menu spotlights what they're known for—tacos —and adds in antojitos and a few larger plates here. Blue corn tortillas are made in house and are delicious folded around queso fresco and crispy epazote, or a cochinita taco with tender braised pork, fried plantain, and red onion habanero lime escabeche. Conchas are the perfect sweet treat, and here they

Geoffrey Ellis and Travis Crawford are the brains behind this popular spot in Mueller that is equal parts Texas barbecue and delicatessen. Located in a shared space, it's a classic no-fuss spot with concrete floors and booths made from wooden slats, but you're here for the food, most likely the house-made pastrami sandwich. Brined, then rubbed with black pepper and coriander before being smoked, they take their meat seriously. Piled high on house-made rye sourdough with mustard, it's their signature item for a good reason. Other sandwiches, meat by the pound, a variety of sides like collard gr
