A true institution on Vienna's fine-dining scene. Expect the unexpected: Markus Mraz and his son Lukas's menu is based on a surprise concept – only the ingredients are revealed in advance. The experience unfolds over 13 small, distinctive courses, far removed from the mainstream and typically centred on a single star ingredient, which forms the basis of the menu. A memorable example is the "kimchi börek", in which aromatic sika venison meets vibrant, tangy kimchi, elevated by fine shavings of Périgord truffle. The setting is chic, modern and relaxed. At the chef's table by the open kitchen, di

In Konstantin Filippou's elaborate tasting menu, the spotlight is firmly on fish and seafood, with meat largely absent or relegated to a supporting role. One standout dish is the delicate, mousse-like brandade of Amur carp and potato, served on a bed of al dente, slightly tart white asparagus, finished with fragrant toasted almond pieces and almond purée, plus a dollop of caviar. His strikingly modern seven- to nine-course set menu showcases top-quality ingredients from international markets. As a native Styrian with Greek roots, the chef-patron discreetly incorporates influences from both his

A lively, informal restaurant serving authentic Japanese cuisine with some more modern twists, at moderate prices. You can watch the chefs at work as they prepare sushi rolls, yakitori or gyu don. At lunchtime, the food is served in bowls; in the evening the presentation is a bit more elaborate. In summer, the terrace in front of the building makes for a lovely spot. Tables are much in demand, so book early! The establishment also runs a takeaway right across the street.

This restaurant is somewhat tucked away in a courtyard, which boasts a charming terrace for pleasant weather. Both here and in the inviting interior – notable details include vaulted ceilings and distinctive prints hung on the wall – diners are treated to very friendly service and delicious regional cuisine. The seasonally oriented menu features items such as marinated fillet of Arctic char on beetroot tartare with a horseradish foam, alongside classics like Wiener schnitzel. The wine list is well curated and distinctly Austrian – expert guidance is available. Tip: Look out for their special s

This small restaurant with six tables is housed in what used to be a coffee house – the sign outside simply reads "K". They serve a six-course set menu made using seasonal ingredients, into which chef Daniel Horner (previously sous-chef at Japanese restaurant Mochi) and his team cleverly incorporates the odd subtle Asian flavour. Drawing on a selection of Austrian and international wines, sommelier Vanessa Schober recommends pairings for the set menu. Non-alcoholic tea accompaniments are also available. Diners can alternatively opt for a shortened tasting menu comprising just four courses. The

The wonderful painted ceiling – the work of artist Otto Zitko – is the first thing to catch your eye here. The staff are friendly and attentive, and the food is delicious. Among the Austrian classics on the menu is Wiener schnitzel with potato salad and lingonberries. For dessert, try the île flottante! In front of the building there is a lovely terrace shielded from the street by greenery. The location in the Karmeliterviertel is another draw – just a stone's throw from Schloss Augarten with its porcelain manufactory and museum, as well as its park grounds.

The location on the 18th floor of lifestyle hotel SO/Vienna is undeniably spectacular – the view of Vienna is phenomenal! Add to that the attentive, laid-back service and cuisine that draws on modern influences. Great wine selection. There is also a popular cocktail bar.

Industrial-chic design and soaring ceilings set the tone in this inviting modern bistro, complemented by a cosy bar area for pre-dinner drinks that adds to the laid-back, welcoming vibe. The kitchen serves Mediterranean-Greek inspired dishes, reflecting the cultural heritage of owner Konstantin Filippou, whose fine dining restaurant happens to be located right next door. The dishes are usually served as smaller portions, making them ideal for sharing. For the main course, you can choose between meat, fish and veggie options, which change periodically.
