Agi's Counter

You have room for one more dish, right? It’s a question that will come up often at this sweet little diner in Crown Heights. Chef Jeremy Salamon takes inspiration (and the restaurant’s name) from his Hungarian grandmother for a delightfully casual but fine-tuned effort. With walls painted cupcake pink, the kitchen has a real talent for bread. A thick slide of grilled potato pullman bread smeared with whipped chicken liver mousse topped with sour cherry caramel is a decadent treat, while a bowl of savory chicken broth bobbing with nokdeli, or Hungarian dumplings, will cure your ails. Chavela’s

Ordering guacamole may be a reflex for many, but at Chavela’s, what lands on the table is far from the norm. Mexico City native Chef Arturo Leonar is the brains behind this exceptional riff, which mixes smoked trout, pico de gallo, and morita chile salsa to thrilling effect. His creativity even extends to other dishes, like taquitos de cangrego with sweet crabmeat and spicy salsa verde, as well as tamales with pork short rib and hoja santa with green mole Oaxaqueño sauce. Traditionalists may rest easy, as the subtly sweet mole coating chicken and enchiladas alike is bound to delight. Featuring

Olmo has a true neighborhood feel, where communal tables encourage new friendships, and light wood and plenty of white create a soothing ambience. The food is inspired by Mexico City with a focus on nostalgic, approachable flavors. Find everything from chicharrón preparado and eggplant milanesa to lacto-fermented crudités on this menu. There are so many winning dishes, but the grilled branzino over a bed of stewed beans with a colorful circle of morita salsa is surely one to consider. Carne asada is another can't miss, with a 12-ounce steak topped with a bright salad of verdolaga greens and sh

Chef/owner Boris Ginet's all-day cafe is a perfect spot to visit before or after a visit to Prospect Park, just a stone's throw away. And while its whitewashed walls lined with artistic photos, industrial-chic cement floors and a glorious garden patio hint at its Brooklyn locale, the anchor here is the open-air, Parisian-style rotisserie, churning out a host of delectably roasted items. This menu highlights everything from bowls and platters to seasonal soups, vegetables and grains. The roasted chicken is a must. Marinated for 72 hours with a host of spices, it's a signature. The Risbo platter

This tiny, high-energy Cambodian restaurant in Crown Heights is already a neighborhood fixture. Reservations disappear quickly, so arrive early in order to jockey for a spot at their counter. From the ambience to the shared plates-style menu, this is the kind of place that begs for a group to best sample standouts like plea satch ko, a Cambodian beef salad with razor-thin meat that melts in your mouth in a delightfully funky, spicy sauce. Don't miss the crispy whole fish sided by green mango sauce. Set over chilled vermicelli noodles and accompanied by all of the fixings for packing lettuce wr

Set on the corner of Halsey and Throop in Bed-Stuy, Daphne's sparkles ever so subtly thanks to a front window covered with strands of tiny, twinkling silver beads. But it's not just the exterior that invites curiosity; this refined, contemporary Italian-American restaurant dazzles with its tightly edited menu, too. From shareable plates and house-made pasta to entrees, there is something tempting at every turn. Do not miss the delicious golden-brown focaccia with anchovy butter or grilled mortadella over a bed of house-made giardiniera. Then, mustard green pesto stars in a dish of radiatore pa

Cafe Mado

At first glance, it may seem like your typical neighborhood all-day café, but there’s more than meets the eye at Café Mado. This Prospect Heights café bustles with a coffee shop up front and a skylit atrium with a small bar and dining room. It is here where they sell house-baked bread, breakfast sandwiches, elegant small plates, and handmade pasta by day before shifting to a refined dinner of small plates. Begin with pissaladière, a warm, round loaf topped with anchovies, caramelized red onions, and olive spread or kick things off with a seasonal small plate like summer melon with lime granita

Tucked behind the Franklin Avenue subway stairs, this intimate Mediterranean venue has been causing quite a stir. A pretty slate-blue façade directs you to a small space starring whitewashed brick walls, blonde wood tables and a skylight. A handful of seats at the marble counter offer a view into the mini kitchen. But, there is nothing mini about Chef Nick Perkins’ culinary skills. In fact, he is the master of working magic out of a small kitchen.Start with an heirloom tomato salad laced with olive oil, dried red chili, and paired with escabeche-style mussels. Then perfectly poached hake is se
