Sushi Note
Japanese, Sushi
$$$$
Nota bene: Sushi Note is far from a postscript. Whether you're here for the supreme fish or distinctly focused wine selection, it hits all the marks. The sleek dining room is defined by soft fabrics, moody colors and provocative artwork, including framed letters and photos. Chef Kiminobu Saito showcases serious craftsmanship, ace textures and rare flavors in his seasonal plates, available in half-note or full-note omakase menus or à la carte. The attention to detail is remarkable, with every piece of nigiri and sashimi cut to order. Meaty and sweet scallop with truffle salt and citrus, perfect

Pasta|Bar
Contemporary, American · ★ Michelin
$$$$
A stylishly modern space hidden inside an unassuming strip mall, this hip concept's tasting menu is one for the books. Drinks and a snack kick things off in a well-appointed front bar and the staff is wonderfully engaging as they serve a host of delectable, hyper-local items. The eclectic cuisine travels beyond the borders of Italian tradition, offering up such creations as a single agnolotti tucked with braised oxtail, crispy onions and a Comté cheese espuma, or sunchoke gnocchi with Ibérico pluma and crispy sourdough breadcrumbs. A delicate, twirl of tagliatelle made from porcini powder is g

ALTO
South American
$$$$
Experience the flavors of Argentina and Uruguay at ALTO, a live-fire restaurant in Studio City led by Juana Castellanos Lagemann and Esteban Klenzi. Both chefs have impressive fine dining resumes, and here they focus on the fire, delivering hearty, comforting dishes with an elevated, modern take. It's all easily shareable, so go ahead and order several for the table. Begin with breads like chipa, a cheesy yuca bread accompanied by tomato butter, or criollo, a buttery layered bread served with herb butter. Hand-cut braised beef and house-made dough stand out in the OG empanada. Proteins, like t

Anajak Thai
Thai, Contemporary
$$$
Now in its fifth decade of operation, this beloved family-owned fixture has never been more in demand. Much of its current acclaim owes to second-generation Chef Justin Pichetrungsi, whose cooking balances tradition with a contemporary, crowd-driven sensibility. This is amply demonstrated on freewheeling “Thai Taco Tuesdays,” a no-reservations event that draws lines around the block. For additional excitement, one weekend per month, a unique omakase experience remains one of the city’s most sought-after reservations. Whether sampling well-executed Thai classics or exploring occasional off-menu

Asanebo
Japanese, Sushi
$$$$
With its spare design, fire-glazed stone pottery and even Hello Kitty dolls doubling as décor, everything about Asanebo’s look is appealing. There is certainly no dearth of sushi restaurants in this city, but this well-regarded favorite has been at it for more than two decades. Three omakase options open the menu, which then expands to an impressive, if somewhat dizzying five pages filled with everything from maki, house signature dishes and an entire page dedicated to desserts. With so many decisions, it’s best to stick to the daily specials, though do keep a close watch on the prices, which

Leona’s Sushi House
Japanese, Peruvian
$$$
Some places have great ambience. Others have terrific food. Think you can't find both in the same spot? Think again, then head to Leona's Sushi House. This hip spot has a variety of distinctive spaces that lure creative types and beautiful people. This Japanese fusion menu never misses a beat. Dishes are often irreverent, as in rich and savory udon carbonara with paper thin smoked pork belly, creamy egg and parmigiano; and the sticky-sweet oxtail-stuffed bao is craveworthy. Seafood is impressive, whether it's ceviche or sashimi-quality halibut bathed in a ponzu sauce vinaigrette. Chef's specia
