Sanguich De Miami

Cuban · Bib

What started out as a little shipping container in 2017 has morphed into this brick-and-mortar hot spot in Little Havana. There is almost always a line of diners vying to squeeze into the narrow space, designed with emerald-green walls, vibrant tile and sleek brass trimmings.Everyone comes for the same thing: a superb Cuban sandwich featuring pork butt that's been marinated for a week in garlic and spices, then pressed between expertly grilled slices of house-made bread. A heavier but equally flavorful alternative is the lechon, starring tender shredded pork slathered in garlic-cilantro aïoli.

Lung Yai Thai Tapas

Thai

You could drive down the street a dozen times and still overlook this intimate little nook that hides in plain sight. Little Havana is certainly an unexpected place to find one of the city’s hottest Thai kitchens, but the long waits are an indication (no reservations) that Chef/owner Veenuthri Trisransri knows what he’s doing. On a menu that mixes typical standbys with Northern specialties, begin with an order of homemade dumplings with a pork or shrimp filling, served steamed or fried. Khao Soi, a coconut-based curry with your choice of protein, bobs with egg noodles and has a rich, creamy pr

Shingo

Japanese, Sushi · ★ Michelin

$$$$

Chef Shingo Akikuni, ever gracious and welcoming, has returned, now back in action behind a spacious, 14-seat counter in Coral Gables. Most premium sushi omakases work with half as many seats, but there’s no cause for concern here: Chef Akikuni and his second-in-command handle the crowd without breaking a sweat and even switch sides midway through the meal. Once the room fills with the sharp smell of vinegar to mix into the sushi rice, it’s off to the races. Fish is sourced almost entirely from Japan, sliced in uniform fashion, and, dressed with little more than a swipe of nikiri. They keep a

Husband-and-husband team Tam Pham and Harrison Ramhofer are throwing a party on their own terms. On the edge of downtown by the county courthouse, you won’t find a glamorous room, a DJ booth, or anybody in stilettos or designer sneakers. There is no bouncer by the door. Instead, come as you are for this celebration of Vietnamese cooking that started out as a supper club. Much of the food doesn’t require silverware: Think wings glossed in fish sauce caramel, smoky lamb with lettuce wraps and banh hoi noodles, and tamarind-glazed pork ribs. Finish with a slice of cheesecake made with cultured ca

Bistro Ocho

Mexican, Contemporary

$$$

The hustle and bustle of Calle Ocho quickly fades once inside this beautiful space that glows a gorgeous amber and features colorful floors, a dramatic ceiling and modern light fixtures. A finely stocked bar anchors the dining room, where guests enjoy contemporary Mexican cuisine prepared with the occasional Floridian spin. Think house-made brioche topped with king crab salad and finished with ikura. The classics are carefully handled here too: Lamb barbacoa tossed in a three-chili salsa arrives with house-made corn tortillas, while warm chalupas feature fiery salsa verde. A doughnut filled wi

Seasonal Cuisine · Bib

Friends Robert Ortega and Jhonny Delgado are creating something special in this neighborhood eatery, offering a casual yet elevated dining experience. The ever-evolving, seasonal menu consists of eight or so dishes, with everything made in house. The crab arepa, a classical Venezuelan cornmeal patty, filled with lovely deep-fried soft-shell crab and finished with a nice tangy chimichurri salsa, is delicious. Cheese Benedict with cured ham, fried mushrooms, rich Parmesan cream and topped with poached eggs, is served with lightly toasted shokupan (Japanese milk bread) which is perfect for moppin

Hiden

Japanese, Sushi · ★ Michelin

True to its name, this favored counter is indeed hidden in the thick of busy Wynwood. The front door is not easy to find and slides open only with a time-sensitive passcode. But beyond the hustle and bustle, Chef Seijun Okano offers a mature, finely tuned omakase for the fortunate few seated at his counter. Fish flown in multiple times a week from Japan are handled with precision, sliced carefully and pressed into lush, vinegar-tinged rice that he makes at the start. Everyone is encouraged to ask questions and drink freely. All the while, the team works in perfect tandem, delivering a well-pac
