De Moerbei

Farm to table, Modern French · ★ Michelin

€€€

Chef Michael Corpel and sommelier Frank de Haas are writing a new chapter in the illustrious story of De Moerbei. In 1996, this old farmhouse was transformed into a stylish restaurant exuding elegance. From its early days to the present day, the ambition of this place has remained unchanged: to delight guests with top-quality produce, be it wine or North Sea sole. Chef Corpel takes inspiration from techniques and ingredients from all over the world, while resolutely forging his own culinary path. His meticulously crafted dishes draw on local produce, enhanced here and there by exotic touches,

Café de Gaper

International, Modern French · Bib

€€

Café de Gaper is delightfully laid back. A glance at details such as the exposed beam ceiling and the elegant apothecary cabinet reveals the building's rich history. The menu, divided into bites / raw / cold / hot / cheese / sweet, offers excellent value for money. The chef likes to give classic recipes a twist with fiery Asian seasonings. Think brioche with a salmon farce fine enhanced with chipotle, or briefly fried mushrooms and halibut with a crispy crust paired with a beurre blanc and dashi emulsion for a touch of umami. And to win you over completely, there is a nicely curated wine list.

You could definitely call Arie Visscher's "café" a luxury brasserie. An abundance of red velvet, marble and copper give the place a remarkably warm and welcoming feel. Open all day from 11am, it's a great option for lunch, dinner or a quick bite at the bar. Chef Visschers specialises in French classics such as steak tartare elevated with smoked eel, or sea bass with a delightfully buttery potato mousseline and artichoke. He also showcases his creativity with a modern dish based on hispi cabbage. This Rotterdam native sticks to a single set menu, crafting beautifully balanced no-nonsense cuisin

The Bishop is where the bustling centre of Leiden truly comes alive. The wooden beams and supporting columns are a reminder of the building's past, yet the trendy decor and lively atmosphere give it a contemporary feel. Take a punt on the surprise menu or order from the small à la carte selection – the chef's creations include subtle nods to his Indonesian heritage. He draws inspiration from all over the world, dabbling in international flavours to create exciting dishes: serundeng and Asian spices are added to the rendang, kimchi and gochujang to the veal tartare, hot and spicy aji amarillo t

Wielinga

Modern French

€€€

Housed in a historical building, this charming restaurant has more of an intimate feel at the front than at the back, thanks to the natural light. However, the best spot is the canal-side terrace – perfect for soaking up Leiden's vibrant atmosphere. The chef proposes an appealing set menu with options for each course (priced higher in the evening than at lunch) alongside an à la carte selection that showcases premium ingredients. From sole fried in butter to skrei topped with a Taggiasca olive crumble and accompanied by a bright sauce vierge, lobster tartare and a rich lobster bisque, her dish

The moment you enter this welcoming restaurant, the emphasis on French and European wines is unmistakable. So, an aperitif is definitely in order before settling down to the food, which is rooted in French culinary tradition and includes occasional international influences. No fancy foams here, just top-notch ingredients. Think rare ribeye accompanied by a full-bodied bordelaise sauce, or sea bass ceviche marinated in calamansi and red chilli, seasoned with pezo and served alongside fresh snow crab, coastal vegetables and fennel prepared with a crisp, acidic dressing. This is a chance to savou

The Vliet canal provides the stunning backdrop to this stylishly decorated yet cosy farmhouse. The waterfront terrace (with mooring facilities) and the sight of the passing boats captures everyone's heart. Savour classic lobster soup with crayfish and Cognac crème, or tuck into a medium-rare beef fillet with a bold red wine jus.
