Dating back over 300 years, this traditional Graubünden house abounds with charm. The cosy, rustic restaurant, with its sloping walls, old soapstone stove and beautiful wood-panelled ceiling, has the feel of a place steeped in history. The hearty food is firmly rooted in the region, with classics such as Capuns (Swiss chard rolls) and Maluns (fried potato crumbles), as well as saffron soup, beef tartare, and sliced veal with creamy mushroom sauce – simply delicious! Prices are very fair, and service is pleasingly friendly and informal. It's wise to book, as the restaurant is very popular, espe

GÜTSCH by Markus Neff

This restaurant high up on the Gütsch mountain (2 344m above sea level), after which it is named, can be reached on the Gütsch Express cable car – hop on at the lower terminus (departing from Andermatt railway station). Chef Markus Neff and his team, along with the restaurateur trio of Müller, Gruß and Neumüller, put their heart and soul into this venture. The best place to sit is on the spectacular terrace – you could even call it a viewing platform! And if the weather isn't playing ball, it's just as pleasant to sit inside. The decor is modern and simple, which is entirely in keeping with th

For a chance to savour terrific Japanese cuisine high up in a stunning Alpine setting, head to this restaurant, located 2 344m above sea level, and preferably bag a table on the wonderful terrace set against this grandiose mountain backdrop! Working in tandem, twin brothers Dominik Sato and Fabio Toffolon create classic Japanese cuisine with subtle European influences. Opt for the "Omakase Kaiseki Menu" (vegetarian version possible), "Shidashi Bento" or their wonderful selection of sushi, sashimi – and N25 caviar. A children's menu is also available. Manuel Reichenbach represents the third generation of his family to run the kitchen here. The cuisine showcases regional and seasonal ingredients of the finest quality. Sustainability is also a core value at this restaurant. Take a punt on the surprise menu, which comprises four to seven courses, or go à la carte. The friendly and adept front-of-house team is managed by the proprietress.

The journey up to the village of Gurtnellen, at an altitude of 935m, is well worth it! Chef-owner Beat Walker is the fifth generation of his family to run this charming restaurant dating back to the 19C. He is assisted by Roland Gloor, who takes excellent care of diners. Behind the wooden shingle façade that is typical of the region, the atmosphere is inviting, from the Gaststube on the ground floor to the elegant wood-panelled Urnerstube on the first floor. There is also a beautiful terrace with mountain views. At lunchtime, there are à la carte dishes (eg trout with Siiwgagglä (fried potatoe
