Little Coyote

You could come to this St. Elmo spot for its view of Lookout Mountain alone, but then you'd miss out on some seriously good Tex-Mex cooking. Erik and Amanda Niel's Little Coyote is all about smoked meats, house-made corn tortillas and tempting cocktails. Familiar favorites like fajitas and queso make an appearance, and since it's all intended for sharing, order with abandon. Consider kicking off the meal with a stuffed avocado, made vegetarian or with brisket or tender, smoky carnitas. Then tuck into a tostada layered with braised oxtail. Finished with a fried egg and cactus chow chow, it's fa

Main Street Meats

The name truly says it all. Located on Main Street in Chattanooga, this spot is indeed all about meat. It's equal parts butcher shop and restaurant, and their whole animal butchery mindset is reflected on the menu. House-made sausages and boudin made with pork and rice and served with house-made crackers are a perfect introduction before meat-forward mains like a burger and a selection of steaks. There's a cut for everyone here, and each one arrives with perfect grill marks and house-made tallow fries. Need something green? Order a side of bok choy or broccoli before indulging in chocolate gel

Easy Bistro

This beloved locals' haunt is tucked into downtown Chattanooga, and Easy Bistro is just that. Comfortable but unfussy, this spot from Erik and Amanda Niel has been around for more than two decades. They open early with oyster hour, and it's always a hit. The menu is American at heart, with oysters and small plates, pasta, meat and side dishes, all created with a seasonal mindset. Tagliatelle with Florida rock shrimp and bottarga in a lemon butter sauce is given a boost of texture courtesy of Appalachian rye breadcrumbs, while pot de creme or ricotta doughnuts are worthy desserts. .

The Rosecomb

Set in a charming 1920s cottage just above downtown Chattanooga, The Rosecomb isn't just adorable, it's fun and a little bit funky too. The owners have fashioned a likable spot with loads of character, where the menu looks to Appalachia for inspiration and the bar program is strong. Expect quirky, creative cooking. Kilt greens panzanella with root vegetables topped with cornbread croutons and bacon vinaigrette offers a bold, Southern-inflected take on a classic bread salad, while a slow-cooked pulled chicken sandwich with crunchy slaw and diced pepperoncini is just plain delicious.
