Dining

Erth

Modern Cuisine, Emirati Cuisine · ★ Michelin

Meaning ‘legacy’, Erth is made up of many striking elements, from its dramatic location as part of the Qasr Al Hosn cultural site, to its bold architecture. Inside, the polished concrete and bespoke furniture, along with modern majlis, make for a unique environment. Equally memorable is the food which, while modern, is anchored firmly in Emirati traditions when it comes to flavours, cookware and ingredients sourced from farms across the Emirates. A modern take on lamb machboos delivers tender lamb slow-cooked in a sweet and savoury teriyaki sauce, served with fluffy, fragrant rice. We suggest

Almayass

Lebanese, Armenian · Bib

Almayass is where Lebanese and Armenian cuisine meet influences from around the Mediterranean. The original was founded in Beirut in 1996 and this large Abu Dhabi branch, where the circular booths are the prized seats, continues the tradition of offering an extensive menu of very generous portions – ideal for sharing. Start off with one of their fresh, vibrant Itch salads before moving on to Meshwi Shekaf – grilled veal with spiced bread. This spot is not just for one-time visits – you’ll have to come often to do this menu justice.

ryba

Seafood · Bib

Set in Al Mina souq, just a stone’s throw from the fish market at Zayed Port, is this modern, seafood restaurant serving the best of the local catch, cooked with some global influences. Dishes are generously sized, prepared with evident care, use the best of Emirati ingredients and spices, and are perfect for sharing; those from the charcoal grill are a highlight, especially the locally caught hammour. Don’t leave without trying their signature dessert: the chocolate pâte à choux. Service is sweet, relaxed, warm and friendly.

Al Mrzab

Emirati Cuisine · Bib

The bright neon sign is the first thing you notice about Al Mrzab; the second thing is the sheer number of diners who flock here, so expect to wait for a table – but the team cope well with such a busy restaurant. Photos of old Abu Dhabi line the walls, while seating is split between private cabins, majlis and conventional tables. The traditional Emirati and Kuwaiti dishes are packed with flavour, use quality ingredients and offer good value for money. Be sure to finish with the hot, golden, cooked-to-order khanfaroush drizzled with local honey.

Finz

Seafood

$$$$

Eating seafood by the sea – there aren’t many things in life that can beat it. At Finz the fish and shellfish come in a variety of styles to suit all tastes, so if you want to feel you’re holidaying on the Med you can order fruits de mer or moules marinières, while those who prefer a more Asian theme can try the tempura roll or teriyaki salmon. The charming service is another delight here.

99 Sushi Bar

Japanese Contemporary

$$$$

The well-constructed and beautifully presented dishes at this chic Japanese restaurant underline the quality of the ingredients used. The Spanish owners import most of the seafood from their native country; the flamed red mullet with kumquat tiger milk balances spice, fruit and acidity to deliver well-judged flavours. It’s all run as smoothly as silk and is the ideal venue for an intimate experience. The tasting menu for two is always worth trying.

Hakkasan

Chinese · ★ Michelin

$$$$

Regulars of this exclusive international brand will instantly recognise the sultry and chic oriental décor within this branch, located within the Emirates Palace hotel. All the time-honoured classics are on the menu, like Peking duck, Chilean sea bass with honey and, on Saturday lunchtimes, their celebrated dim sum, all prepared with enormous skill. Opt for the premium dim sum and any of Hakkasan’s 'signatures', which are highlighted on the menu. A well-chosen wine list delivers an interesting global selection with plenty of top producers. Em Sherif Sea Café

$$$

Meaning “mother of Sherif” in Arabic, this restaurant pays homage to the original Beirut branch first opened in 2011. Situated inside the Rosewood hotel, this light, contemporary space offers far reaching views of the water surrounding Al Maryah Island and interiors boasting Portuguese Azulejo hand-painted wall tiles. The authentic menu is seafood focused – make sure you check out the seafood counter as you arrive – and has a wide variety of vibrant, well-balanced Lebanese dishes made for sharing.
