You’ll almost always find a line stretching out the door of this Sichuan superstar, which has rocked Sunset Park with its sharp renderings of Chengdu classics. The two-story space is light on amenities, with rustic wooden tables and short, backless stools, but the earpiece-wearing staff is as adept and meticulous as the food itself—and happy to dispense menu guidance to novices. While many associate Sichuan fare with buckets of numbing chili oil, these chefs tend to go light on the spice, letting complex flavors shine in dishes like whole fish slathered with sweet peppers or slivered pork in a

LORE

american, indian · Bib

Welcoming with just the right amount of buzz, Lore embodies the perfect neighborhood spot—if your neighborhood happens to be sophisticated Park Slope. This unique corner storefront at the base of a residential building delivers creative Indian-infused and American fare made even more enjoyable thanks to warm service in an inviting setting. Chef Jay Kumar's food is certainly the star, but the poetic cocktail list is worth more than a cursory glance. Enjoy a three-course menu or order à la carte to revel in smart, refined dishes like roasted butternut squash over babaghanoush, a signature fermen

Runner Up

continental · Bib

Next-door sibling Winner may earn the trophy for its bread and desserts (also served here) but Runner Up is likely number one in many hearts given its serious focus on fresh, seasonal produce anchored by savory heavy hitters. Blink and you'll miss this diminutive place drenched in natural light. The good vibes extend to the food, where you may tuck into a sweet-tart citrus salad with aged gouda and cool-crisp fennel. Then, toasted sourdough is served alongside creamy trout rillette for a smoky-savory bite. A play on tortellini en brodo uses paper-thin daikon radish as the "pasta" with crumbles

This is the kind of spot that serves food so memorable you'll find yourself craving the same meal well after your visit. The kitchen is known for surprising diners at every twist and turn, as evidenced by the tteokbokki—spicy rice cake topped with Oaxacan cheese and chorizo. Start your meal with yache pajun, a savory and crisp pancake filled with vegetables. Not to be missed is the daegu jorim, cod fish braised in a luscious, sweet soy sauce served with tender daikon radish and jammy onions. Beat the heat with the mak-gutsu, chilled and icy soba noodles served with chili vinaigrette, then wind

Yemenat

Middle Eastern · Bib

Located in Bay Ridge, a neighborhood known for its vibrant Middle Eastern community, Yemenat is a cozy, family-style spot. This local gem shares an appealing a la carte of Yemeni cuisine, featuring classic appetizers like hummus and shafoot and hearty entrees like lamb sughar and shakshoka Adeni. Main dishes like the standout lamb haneeth, or braised lamb shoulder over golden-tinted hadrami rice, are unapologetically generous in portion and perfect for sharing. Even the sides like sahaweq, or grated tomato with spices intended for drizzling over the rice or dipping into with a piece of rashoos

This warm Middle Eastern restaurant is tucked into an unassuming Bay Ridge corner and run by Chef/owner Rawia Bishara and her daughter. Meals graciously commence with pickled vegetables and za’atar-dusted flatbread and are followed by a tableful of unique plates brimming with flavors and colors. Turkish salad is actually a bright red tomato spread, shot with harissa and dressed with bits of diced cucumber and a drizzle of excellent olive oil. Appetizers are numerous (grape leaves are a lively sure thing), but don't miss the mansaf, a homey dish consisting of braised lamb doused in creamy yogur

This trendy Brooklyn spot from Chef Paul D’Avino is quirky from start to finish, and that's exactly what makes it shine. The contemporary menu is equal parts modern and nostalgic, with an outlandish creativity to boot. It's all intended for sharing, so come with a gang and kick off the festivities with four squares of negroni Jell-O with Castelvetrano olives suspended inside. Garlic knot monkey bread is topped with dollops of Parmesan butter and before tucking into a plate of pasta, consider the muffaletta dim sum. You've likely never had anything like it before, where fried sesame balls are t

You have room for one more dish, right? It’s a question that will come up often at this sweet little diner in Crown Heights. Chef Jeremy Salamon takes inspiration (and the restaurant’s name) from his Hungarian grandmother for a delightfully casual but fine-tuned effort. With walls painted cupcake pink, the kitchen has a real talent for bread. A thick slide of grilled potato pullman bread smeared with whipped chicken liver mousse topped with sour cherry caramel is a decadent treat, while a bowl of savory chicken broth bobbing with nokdeli, or Hungarian dumplings, will cure your ails.
