A “hidden oasis” of peace and harmony in the heart of Ljubljana, just steps from the lively riverfront. Shambala is an Asian restaurant of elegant and discreet atmosphere, with oriental references that never tip into excess. The gastronomic proposal ranges across Japan, Thailand and Vietnam, with meat, seafood and vegetarian options available both à la carte and as tasting menus. Among the specialities, an excellent Thai curry stands out alongside traditional preparations and others of fusion inspiration. In the desserts, more classic notes are enriched with exotic touches, as in the panna cot

The internationally inspired cuisine is at its best in the first courses and the grilled options, with an open grill visible in the middle of the dining room. The specialities here include ribeye, fillets, fish of the day and scampi, all of which are accompanied by lightly sautéed, crispy seasonal vegetable

This restaurant’s excellent location is best appreciated in summer, with tables overlooking the river and charming views of the castle lit up at night. The dining room, personally designed by the chef with taste and sensitivity, is also attractive, boasting muted tones and an elegant and intimate ambience inspired by the early 20C. The cuisine is Mediterranean in style, with a focus on fish and seafood – the shellfish are excellent, as is the delicious grilled sea bass with buttered mashed potatoes. One of the house specialities (which must be booked in advance) is the lamb cooked in the wood-

Gostilna na Gradu
Traditional Cuisine
€€
The most scenic way to reach Ljubljana castle, which overlooks the city from the top of a hill, is by funicular – or by foot, if you like walking uphill. However you choose to get here, you’ll find this restaurant in the castle’s spacious inner courtyard, where it serves excellent local cuisine. Among the dishes that we enjoyed most, our favourite was the veal and curly kale – a superb fillet of veal served with the perfect accompaniment of curly kale and a fragrant mushroom cream.

Head up to the first floor to this retro-style restaurant, where you pass a welcoming lounge bar before moving into the main dining room adorned with an attractive fresco. The “culinary journey” offered by the chef here follows the rhythm of the seasons and showcases local traditions, enhanced by the occasional international influence. Although at lunchtime you can order à la carte, in the evening the choice is between three tasting menus (four, six or eight courses) with a wine-pairing option (labels from Slovenia and further afield) or a choice of non-alcoholic drinks.
