€€€€

An upscale, trendy and minimalist design, outstanding creative modern dishes, and informal yet competent service – this restaurant meets the brief of "Casual.Fine.Dining". This place is aptly named, in that craftsmanship (Handwerk) plays a major role in the open kitchen, the domain of chef Thomas Wohlfeld. He brings a winning combination of original ideas, Nordic elements and the odd subtle Far Eastern twist to the table. Dishes such as "skrei, beetroot, green strawberry" or "pork, red cabbage, quince" are pleasingly clear-cut and ingredient-led; they come as a set menu comprising five or six

Tony Hohlefeld and his talented kitchen team steer clear of showmanship and unnecessary frills in their bid to bring precise craftsmanship, technical finesse and original ideas to the table. For all the work, complexity and detail that goes into the food, it is marked by an appealing lightness of touch. Regional culinary star Benjamin Gallein wows diners with subtly creative cuisine in the form of flavoursome dishes that pack a punch. The restaurant is on Platz der Göttinger Sieben, close to the Leine River. It is housed in the modern extension of the historical Leineschloss, a palace that is also the seat of Lower Saxony's state parliament. The name "Votum" is a reference to the choices to be made by diners: the order of the courses, optional upgrades, and wine pairings (standard or "premium") or alcohol-free alternatives. Their original signature dish, "Lobster, shellfish hollandaise, tarra

This pleasingly down-to-earth restaurant is the second in the cube-like extension of the Leineschloss, along with Votum. The flavoursome food is made with select ingredients and draws on French influences. Delicious examples include the fish soup or the Charolais beef bourguignon. It's lovely to dine on the terrace with views onto the weir (Leinewehr) or the square, Platz der Göttinger Sieben.
