Olmo

$$$
Olmo has a true neighborhood feel, where communal tables encourage new friendships, and light wood and plenty of white create a soothing ambience. The food is inspired by Mexico City with a focus on nostalgic, approachable flavors. Find everything from chicharrón preparado and eggplant milanesa to lacto-fermented crudités on this menu. There are so many winning dishes, but the grilled branzino over a bed of stewed beans with a colorful circle of morita salsa is surely one to consider. Carne asada is another can't miss, with a 12-ounce steak topped with a bright salad of verdolaga greens and sh

Chavela’s

Ordering guacamole may be a reflex for many, but at Chavela’s, what lands on the table is far from the norm. Mexico City native Chef Arturo Leonar is the brains behind this exceptional riff, which mixes smoked trout, pico de gallo, and morita chile salsa to thrilling effect. His creativity even extends to other dishes, like taquitos de cangrego with sweet crabmeat and spicy salsa verde, as well as tamales with pork short rib and hoja santa with green mole Oaxaqueño sauce. Traditionalists may rest easy, as the subtly sweet mole coating chicken and enchiladas alike is bound to delight. Featuring

You have room for one more dish, right? It’s a question that will come up often at this sweet little diner in Crown Heights. Chef Jeremy Salamon takes inspiration (and the restaurant’s name) from his Hungarian grandmother for a delightfully casual but fine-tuned effort. With walls painted cupcake pink, the kitchen has a real talent for bread. A thick slide of grilled potato pullman bread smeared with whipped chicken liver mousse topped with sour cherry caramel is a decadent treat, while a bowl of savory chicken broth bobbing with nokdeli, or Hungarian dumplings, will cure your ails. Speedy Romeo

Named for a racehorse and just as focused and quick, Speedy Romeo is a sure bet. Part tavern, part roadside grill, its kitschy décor and modern touches transform this former automotive shop into a surprisingly attractive spot. The owner benefited from years at Jean-Georges’ empire, and that intelligence and experience is conveyed through the smart accents and whimsical menu that begins with Italian ingredients. Peppers stuffed with chopped salami, cheese, and topped with breadcrumbs make for a nice opener. Then, take a chance on the non-traditional but utterly fantastic pizza combinations, suc

This stylish Mexican restaurant is bright and modern, with light-flooded windows and comfy banquettes, while the communal table and cozy bar lined with stools are great spaces to socialize and make new friends.Alta Calidad, means “high quality” and this talented chef certainly puts his money where his mouth is. Crispy tempura shrimp are set atop a tortilla with crunchy cabbage remoulade for an original dish, while paper-thin carne asada sprinkled with Chihuahua cheese and griddled until caramelized and crisp is another standout. Oregano roasted chicken tacos are simply finished with avocado-ch

Entering through this (now) iconic red door is like a trip through the looking glass and into Bushwick’s foodie wonderland. The city’s love affair with Roberta’s seems stronger each year, and for good reason. Everything from the industrial space to the underground bohemian vibe epitomizes Brooklyn-chic. To begin, try the grilled baguettes covered in gigante beans and wilted dandelion green and topped with a soft poached egg before moving on to house-made bucatini tossed in a sungold tomato sauce. Of course, no visit is complete without one of their signature pies, and there's no going wrong wi

There are some places that truly reflect the heart and soul of a neighborhood, and in Bushwick, it's Gordo's Cantina. Family-friendly and with something for everyone, this spot's name also ensures that portion sizes are mighty. Of course, nobody is complaining, thanks to the talents of Chef Reyna Morales, who hails from Mexico City and whose careful handling of familiar favorites goes a long way.Order the tacos tucked with crumbles of aromatic chorizo with a mild heat, while the chile relleno stuffed with creamy queso fresco and beans is a savory delight. Heirloom corn is revered at this Bushwick restaurant, where chef-owners and husband-and-wife Zack and Diana Wangeman nixtamalize, mill, and knead heritage Mexican corn into beautiful, soft tortillas in house. The tightly edited menu gives equal playing time to those tortillas in a variety of ways while also showcasing Chef Zack's fine dining chops. Traditional dishes range from carnitas to ceviche, while creative dishes like chicken liver tostadas with candied kumquats or wagyu tongue empanadas are boundary pushing in the very best way.
