A temple of Spanish gastronomy that should be on the bucket list of every food-lover. Atrio exudes elegance, enthusiasm and sincerity, matched by impeccable service to enhance the dining experience to the full. For guests keen to stay over, the superb guestrooms available at the hotel-restaurant are complemented by the eleven highly luxurious suites at the Casa Palacio Paredes Saavedra, barely 30 metres away. Cáceres-born chef Toño Pérez is at the helm, conjuring up creative cuisine of the highest technical level on a single yet extensive tasting menu that the kitchen adapts in line with your

Versátil

If the prospect of a short food-themed country break appeals to you, this restaurant in the north of Cáceres province is the perfect destination. It is rare to find refined cuisine of this level in such a small rural village, so Versátil will definitely come as a pleasant surprise, hence our recommendation to book ahead. Fronting the project is Alejandro Hernández, alongside his brothers Jesús David and José Luis who are in charge of the dining room. Alejandro worked under the renowned Martín Berasategui, where he acquired the culinary skills that he now showcases in this eclectic yet welcomin

Trujillo, commonly known as the town of the conquistadors, reveals a new side to itself if you visit this stone mansion, located in the heart of the old town. The restaurant, which has taken on a new lease of life having passed down a generation, has been modernised and surprises guests with a delightful terrace on an internal patio, where dinner is usually served. Here they prepare traditional Extremaduran cuisine with contemporary innovative touches, in which oak embers are the undisputed stars of the show. It is no surprise that chef Mario Clemente worked for nearly a year at the legendary

A family-run restaurant with rooms available for those guests keen to explore the beautiful La Vera region. It is run by two siblings, Pilar and Víctor, who have taken over the reins here with both enthusiasm and dedication. They offer an à la carte service with daily recommendations (such as black pudding fritters with green chilli foam or aubergine with miso), a set menu (lunch only, weekdays) and two tasting menus: La Finca, serving 8 courses, and Villa Xarahiz, serving 13 courses (both are available by reservation only, in a separate, elegantly appointed dining room). These feature Iberian

El Palancar
Traditional Cuisine
€€
A family-run restaurant offering attentive service in the heart of the countryside next to the El Palancar monastery (in the local area, they refer to the latter as the diminutive “conventico” as it is said to be the smallest monastery in the world). Its standout features are its terrace, its glass-fronted dining room with views of the delightful natural surroundings, and its updated take on traditional cooking that includes grilled meats cooked on its signature open grill. Other options include roasted goat and suckling pig, both of which need to be ordered ahead of time.

In a town such as Hervás that is so popular with tourists, it is always encouraging to find a restaurant like this offering contemporary dining but without completely sidelining traditional cuisine. Located along a pedestrianised street in the centre of town, it boasts a summer terrace, a bar counter, and a dining room on two floors. They offer updated traditional cuisine that always celebrates Valle del Ambroz produce, with a seasonal menu (notable for its fish of the day) and two tasting menus (L and XL). What to try? Don't miss the crispy suckling pig, confit with orange aroma, or one of th

Madruelo

Discover the true flavours of Extremadura’s pastures and meadows in this regionally inspired restaurant occupying a 19C building just a few metres from the Plaza Mayor. The focus on the reasonably varied à la carte is predominantly on the stalwarts of Extremadura cuisine (morcilla, local sausages, Iberian pork stew etc), although rice options (for a minimum of two guests) and several cod dishes also make an appearance.

Borona Bistró

€€
A small, centrally located restaurant that takes its name from the famous corn bread traditionally eaten in the north of Spain, particularly in Galicia and Asturias. The couple at the helm, Víctor Corchado and Rocío Rey, with him manning the cooker and her front of house, present a detailed cuisine that seeks to respect the traditions of Extremadura and its flavours, updating the dishes both in terms of techniques and presentation. The menu, which includes various individual sampling options, is complemented by a tasting menu called Algarabía (with two wine pairing options: A tour of the regio
