Henry Robertson

Modern British

££

Set within an impressive Victorian hotel, this elegant restaurant is named after the industrialist-cum-MP the property was built for. Take in lovely views over the garden as you enjoy attractively presented dishes from either the simpler lunch menu or more ambitious à la carte. Herbs, fruit and vegetables are grown on the estate, then crafted into seasonally minded plates that incorporate more produce from the local area. The wine list offers some interesting English and local Welsh wines.

The Bryntirion Inn

Traditional British

££

Owned by the same people as nearby country manor Palé Hall, this immaculate, whitewashed roadside inn is overflowing with motorsport and classic car memorabilia from the owner’s collection. The cooking mixes modern British fare with prime cuts from the grill and Bryntiron Classics like a seasonally changing pie and mash. To start, look out for the wonderful lamb croquettes with fragrant mint sauce and piquant gremolata gel. Service is relaxed and friendly, while the comfortable bedrooms are named after Snowdonia peaks.

Tyddyn Llan

Modern Cuisine

££££

A long-standing feature of the North Wales hospitality landscape, this country house hotel and restaurant is nestled on the edge of Snowdonia. An elegant, slate-built former shooting lodge, its dining room has a clean, contemporary feel with light wooden floors and furnishings. The menus make a point of spotlighting the Welsh larder – in dishes that enjoyably combine classic recipes with some global influences, like nahm jim with Orkney scallops or XO sauce with Cornish crab.
