Shopping and fine dining under one roof? Head to the top floor of fashion retailer engelhorn Mode im Quadrat to investigate. A team headed up by Dominik Paul cooks up modern and creative cuisine. With flavours that range from bold and robust to low-key, subtle and highly elegant, the dishes bowl diners over. Made using excellent ingredients, everything is nicely pared down and wonderfully balanced. The carefully devised wine pairings are also impressive – there are alcohol-free alternatives, too. In the evening, you can choose between three set menus: the six-course "Urban Nature", four-course

At Dobler's, a veritable institution in the Quadratestadt, or "City of Squares", chef-owner Eric Schumacher's brand is classic dishes presented with finesse and pleasing simplicity. When you master your craft and have top-notch ingredients in your pantry, there is no need for gimmickry. Fine examples include "white halibut with black salsify ragout, beetroot purée, black radish and beurre blanc with vadouvan" or "pink-roasted leg of venison with parsley root purée, bay bolete mushrooms, pickled cranberries and a spiced jus". Both at lunchtime and in the evening, you can order à la carte or opt

It is well worth making the trip to Jacqueline and Alexander Hahn's restaurant in the Hohensachsen neighbourhood, where you will be rewarded with a pleasant atmosphere and really good food. Not only is the quality spot-on, but there is also an impressive array of dishes, ranging from classic options like Zwiebelrostbraten or Wiener schnitzel to international offerings such as Kashmir curry soup or beef fillet tataki. Food is served in an upscale, tastefully modern setting featuring clean lines and soothing tones.

Accessed via Le comptoir 17, a cosy back room accommodates up to 12 diners who sit down to a five- or seven-course tasting menu – a four- or five-course version is served on Fridays. At Grenzhof, chef Sebastian Andrée and his team are strongly influenced by the seasons and their produce in their modern cuisine, which is served as a three to six-course menu and an appealing à la carte selection. In nice weather, the Kastanienhof is absolutely idyllic; on less clement days and in winter, the Gutsstube with its rural-style decor is welcoming. At lunchtime, options are limited to a lunch buffet and a short lunch menu. They also rent out various spaces for private events. For overnight stays, they propose attractive and inviting country house-style and themed guestrooms.

The Tourist Trap

Modern Cuisine, Creative

What a cool setting this is! On the upper deck of a historical museum ship moored on the Neckar River, this stylish space is imbued with vintage flair. The vibe is fresh, youthful and relaxed. Windows on all sides afford fantastic views, and in fine weather guests can sit out on the open deck. Dennis Maier, who most recently earned a MICHELIN star for Mannheim's Emma Wolf since 1920, has transformed the museum ship from the "tourist trap" (that inspired the name) into a culinary hotspot. He and his accomplished kitchen team serve two seven-course set menus (one of which is vegetarian), plus a
