Kräuterreich by Vitus Winkler

Creative, Seasonal Cuisine · ★★ Michelin

"Avant-garde Alpine" would be a good label for Vitus Winkler's cuisine, which is creative, firmly rooted in the local region and always very flavourful despite its complexity. The owner expresses his strong connection to his homeland and his love for nature and the mountains in his surprise menu, featuring plenty of herbs, berries, roots etc, as seen in dishes like the Pinzgau Angus beef with parsley root, black currant and larch. This modern Alpine tavern is a wonderful alternative to the fine dining restaurant here at Hotel Sonnenhof. Windows between the two dining areas foster a nice and airy feel and mean there is a view of the magnificent mountain landscape from almost every table. Think "Alpine fish soup – paprika fish soup, Alpine prawns, fennel agnolotti" or "Pongauer Fleischkrapfen (meat and sauerkraut dump

As the name suggests, steaks cooked on the grill are the main attraction here. The meat, dry-aged in-house, is impressive in terms of quality and perfectly judged cooking. Side dishes can be individually selected. Those who prefer surf and turf can add on locally raised prawns or scallops, for example. Oysters and caviar are also on the menu, and there are vegetarian dishes, too. The space is tasteful, modern and cosy – a glass wine cooler, dry ager and pleasant lighting concept underscore the upscale interior. The heart of the dining room is the open kitchen with the grill in the centre. The
