La Table de la Bergerie

This restaurant near Angers, in the heart of the Coteaux-du-Layon vineyards, is well worth your attention. It is the haunt of talented David Guitton, who hails from Loire Atlantique and who has trained under top chefs all over the world from the United States and Britain to Monaco. There is no à la carte menu here, but a voluntarily concise offering that reverently respects the seasons. David sources his ingredients from small, local producers, rustling up dishes that err towards minimalist so that the flavour can take centre stage. Regional wines, including the estate’s organic production, ta

Saint Lazare Priory is located in the heart of Fontevraud Abbey, one of Europe’s largest monastic complexes. The former’s cloisters have been morphed into a restaurant by designer Patrick Jouin and architect Sanjit Manku, who have staged a marriage between monastic minimalism and untreated materials to set the scene for Thibaut Ruggeri’s cooking. The latter, who hails from Megève and who won the Bocuse d’Or 2013, learnt the trade with iconic culinary names from Michel Guérard to Georges Blanc. A champion of good food and biodynamic farming, local produce takes pride of place (Racan poultry, An

Le Petit Serrant, an 18C manor house located at the confluence of the River Maine and River Loire, is the elegant setting for this restaurant, where diners come as much for the cuisine as for the charm of the location. Romain Zarazaga, a chef trained by Laurent Petit, Emmanuel Renaut and the Troisgros, serves a wonderful array of dishes that are perfectly in tune with the times. His masterful jus and sauces are another standout feature of his cooking – for example, line-caught sea bass confit accompanied by a butter-based fish stock with Domaine Mosse vermouth. The charcoal-grilled squab with

This modest establishment at a remove from the city centre, whose name is a nod to its past vocation as a weaver's house, boasts an inviting interior of exposed stone and wood panelling – the perfect backdrop for contemporary cuisine made with top-notch seasonal ingredients. The short menu is beautifully presented and original, with some unexpected combinations, such as pollock with a helianthus medley, grapefruit and watercress sauce. The food is truly delicious, and that goes for the desserts, too. Don't miss out!

The Morvan duo is back in the saddle and raring to go! They now work side by side, as the chef’s wife is happily back in the kitchen. After kicking off with a high-flying array of appetisers, the couple’s distinctive and creative score sets its sights on the local terroir (his birthplace) with a few hops over to Savoie (her birthplace). You can expect a virtuoso demonstration of culinary balance, enhanced by vibrant, incisive sauces that will sweep your tastebuds off their feet: duckling, sweet potatoes, grapefruit dressing, puree of rosehip and gin-spiked jus… On the beverage side, the alcoho

La P’tite Patte

In the same plush bourgeois edifice as its parent establishment, La Patte Noire, the vintage-appointed La P’tite Patte bistro occupies the ground-floor. The unfussy, wholesome score shines the spotlight on top-drawer produce, examples of which range from a succulent beef-carrot terrine savvily paired with a warm caper and gherkin dressing to tapilla of Iberian pork, wickedly flanked by crunchy fries cooked in beef tallow. Hunger obliterating, throbbing with big-boned flavours and delicately crafted – hard to beat!

Mickaël Pihours (ex-chef of Michelin-starred Le Gambetta) has opened this contemporary, wood-rich eatery. The dining room occupies two levels, with a chef’s table facing the open kitchen. This “cantine plaisir”, as Pihours himself dubs it, bears the veteran chef’s hallmark: hearty dishes to share that tick all the boxes, paired with side dishes garnished with aromatic herbs. Premium cuts of meat to share and offal are also available on a guest-star basis. The menu changes every week.

Nestled at the foot of the castle, this beautiful tuffeau-stone house sports charming dining rooms (parquet floors, exposed rafters and bare stone walls) and peaceful little patios. Chef Anthony Vaillant crafts food in the zeitgeist, jazzed up by a scattering of deft creative touches: start with a medley of asparagus and green peas, enhanced by a citrus fruit flavoured dressing followed by fabulously fresh cod flanked by a curry sauce and velvety mashed potato. Extremely attentive service. Regional tipples take pride of place on the wine list. An enjoyable culinary experience!
