Located at the foot of the Parthenon, this restaurant comes as something of a surprise for various reasons. Firstly, for the stunning view from its terrace; secondly, for its setting, in a historic building that was once the country’s first inn, with a decor that ensures a unique experience enabling guests to view its historic vestiges through the glass floor in the dining room; and, lastly, its cuisine, the main attraction, which comes courtesy of chef Patron Petros Dimas and which showcases the country’s gastronomic heritage through dishes that are creative and impeccable technique. If a dining experience under the stars appeals to you, this highly-sought-after restaurant, particularly during the summer months, will definitely fit the bill thanks to its charming urban terrace dotted with verdant trees and shrubs. Nor will the interior disappoint, with an elegant dining room decorated in soft colours and boasting a sophisticated ambience and subdued lighting. Here, chef Alexandros Tsiotinis, ably supported by his team, champions modern Mediterranean cuisine that is characterised by dishes that are meticulously prepared and extremely creative. This restaurant occupies the former family home of the German architect Ernst Zillers, who came to Athens to design some of its public buildings, fell in love with the city and remained here for the rest of his life. The building, which is situated next to the Greek Orthodox cathedral and has now been converted into a hotel (Zillers Boutique Hotel), boasts a rooftop terrace and multi-purpose Roof Garden with fine view of the cathedral and the Acropolis. The Zillers restaurant is only open in the evening and chef Vasilis Roussos offers two tasting menus: Synecdoche and Synthesis, both with crea

If the prospect of lunch or dinner on the elegant terrace of a hotel appeals to you, with the added bonus of background piano music and the eternal Acropolis as a backdrop, Tudor Hall is definitely a good option, especially for a romantic candlelit dinner – but make sure you book ahead. Here, on the 7th floor of the King George Hotel, next to the central Syntagma Square, chef Nikos Livadias showcases his contemporary version of Greek cuisine, based on a concise à la carte menu plus a tasting menu. The end result is a superb combination of well-balanced dishes that display strong technical abil

This restaurant has reinvented itself over the years and what started out as a small tavern is now a vibrant multi-cultural dining space. Occupying an old Greek house with a charming covered patio near the Kerameikos archaeological site, it provides the perfect setting in which to sample contemporary international cuisine. Run in relaxed fashion by the Alexopoulos brothers, the restaurant serves dishes that combine Greek heritage with the brothers’ passion for Spanish cuisine, with fire and smoke adding the finishing touch to the flavours on offer. This new Nolan 2.0 version of the restaurant has chef Michalis Nourloglou in charge of the kitchen, where he follows the same concept and conjures up a combination of Greek cuisine with other dishes from around the world. The menu here is simple and concise, with options that include sea bream tartare, made with fresh fish of the day and served with dried fruits and a hint of citrus, and the mouthwatering shredded and breaded beef cheeks on a bed of cream along with a topping of truffles. The ambience here exudes relaxed joviality and a light, airy feel thanks to the large windows, and is enha

There are just a few restaurants capable of creating a connection between food, nature and a love of one’s country, but here chef Tasos Mantis manages to express his full passion for all three through his cooking. The experience starts with a presentation of the stars of the show here, namely the aromatic herbs used in Soil’s dishes, many of which are sourced from the vegetable garden tended by the chef’s father. The cuisine is highlighted on a single tasting menu which showcases creativity and quality, which can be enjoyed either at the chef’s table, in the bright lounge or in the pleasant wi

This restaurant boasts a concept that takes guests back in time thanks to its focus on the flavours of bygone days. At Pharaoh you won’t find modern cookers as every dish here is cooked using wood or charcoal as in olden days, endowing everything with a sense of simplicity and authenticity. The decor is a show in itself, with its combination of modern and industrial styles, open-view kitchen, plus a spacious balcony on which to enjoy your meal. Chef Manolis Papoutsakis’ cooking revisits Greece’s culinary traditions, but with a contemporary touch, as witnessed in dishes such as Tarama with bott
