L'Essentiel
Modern Cuisine · ★ Michelin

Let’s get down to the basics (or the Essentials), rather than losing time in pointless conjectures. The ingredient rules in this family-run restaurant, next-door to the cathedral, and Éric Vidal is its virtuoso (yet humble) servant. For thirty or so diners, he organises a genuine banquet of flavour, thanks to delicately balanced preparations. Wild turbot baked in olive oil, pressed celery with black truffles; tartare of mango and pineapple with passion fruit jelly and French almond tea cakes… The tasty culinary score is flanked by a selection of wines that is fully equal to the attractive menu

Le Bel'Art
Traditional Cuisine · Bib
€€
In a modern building on the higher ground outside Périgueux, Sandrine and Vincent Cardoso's restaurant has a functional dining space. The food represents a complete change of tack, with a different menu on offer every week. Served with good jus, first-rate local ingredients are accompanied by seasonal vegetables that demonstrate the chef's indisputable expertise. Everything is cooked precisely and from the heart. The brandade of salmon with sweet wine, the chicken supreme in a ramekin with bay leaves and farm spinach, or the diced Golden Delicious apple on a buttery sablé reflect the care lavi

Café Louise

The idea was to unite Italian cuisine and the dishes of Périgord's terroir – and Maryse Benoit-Gonin and her husband have done just that in this cosy bistro. The generous, lovingly prepared dishes combine the best of both worlds: potato gnocchi with Périgord walnut oil; guinea fowl and pancetta terrine with foie gras; Périgord beef meatball alla milanese.

La Table du Pouyaud
Modern Cuisine · Bib
€€
In the upper reaches of Périgueux, chef Gilles Gourvat (a local lad) has been welcoming guests for some fifteen years in a tastefully refurbished farmhouse. His modern recipes pay tribute to Périgord traditions with passing nods to his beloved Basque Country. Local produce is cast in the star role in a hearty gourmet menu: duck confit and wild mushrooms; scrambled eggs and truffles in season; semi-cooked duck foie gras served with figs. A friendly professional front-of-house team caters to your every need.

Richard Lequet
Modern Cuisine
€€€
Having previously garnered a MICHELIN star at L'Amphitryon in Limoges, chef Richard Lequet is now showcasing his talents in this newly renovated elegant bourgeois mansion. His cuisine is seasonal and uses local produce as much as possible. In the evening, the surprise dinner menu includes dishes such as cod steak on a bed of crunchy fennel, carrot brunoise and smoked pancetta, or supreme of Landes poultry ballotine with carrot tagliatelle and a pea purée. The chef makes his own bread from local flours. Should you wish to extend the experience, comfortable guestrooms are available.

Hercule Poireau
Modern Cuisine
€€
At the foot of Cathédrale St Front, this restaurant that pays homage to the fictional detective occupies a 16C room with a pale stone vaulted ceiling. Thanks to his little grey cells, Poirot would no doubt have detected the sincerity behind the deliciously revamped recipes based on produce from the exceptional terroir of the Dordogne: terrine of semi-cooked foie gras and rhubarb pickles with Monbazillac; pan-fried magret de canard; tarte Tatin with salted butter caramel ice cream. A warm welcome and dynamic service.

La Taula
Regional Cuisine
€€
At La Taula (which means "table" in Occitan), Christine Maurence concocts no-nonsense family-style cuisine. Among her specialities, the veal kidney cooked whole with mustard seeds, the home-made stuffed duck's neck, and the semi-cooked foie gras are the signature dishes. An authentic restaurant just next to the cathedral, where traditions are not something to be trifled with!

Oxalis

This ancient edifice, whose oldest stones date back to the 13C, oozes historical cachet (exposed beams and stonework, vaulted cellar that can be rented out for private events), while the open kitchen behind a glass partition and splendid rough-hewn wooden tables add a contemporary touch. The chef-owner, whose CV boasts some top Parisian establishments, conjures up tasty dishes in a bistronomic vein at lunchtime (e.g. burrata with truffle and beetroot seasoning; seabream with aubergine caviar), with a more high-flying score in the evening (white asparagus and scallops; seabass, baby artichoke a
