Once in a while you come across a truly pleasant surprise in a rural setting run by chefs who have returned to their roots with the sole aim of showcasing what they have learnt elsewhere. This is definitely the case with couple Fernando and Eva, two cooks (although she is also in charge of the dining room service) who have restored her grandmother’s house and created their own vegetable garden (which also includes a greenhouse). Their contemporary cuisine has plenty of personality and is centred around a single seasonal vegetarian menu. We loved the roasted aubergines with miso!

It features a busy wine bar, with a few tables for tapas, an impeccably laid out dining room adorned with a beautiful mural of the bucolic Maceira bridge (just a few kilometres away and a must for a visit), as well as a spectacular glass-fronted wine cellar. At this restaurant, nestled inside the Hotel Scala although with its own entrance, they like to say that here you can go ‘to enjoy the best flavours of Galicia at your leisure’. In its bright dining room, with a minimalist atmosphere, you can sample cuisine based on Galician recipes, with contemporary starters with a traditional taste (we were blown away by the bluefin tuna belly sandwich), select meats, good seafood and large fish of the day.
