Occupying the atmospheric setting of the Eden theatre, a former late-19C musical café, this restaurant adorned with beautiful Liberty-style frescoes is the perfect backdrop for elegant, well-balanced Mediterranean-inspired dishes. Young, talented chef Nicola Annunziata offers three tasting menus of five (L’Ora Precisa), seven (La Spudorata) and nine (La Luce) courses with wine pairings recommended by the knowledgeable sommelier. If you’re looking for a quieter and more romantic ambience, book a table in the 14C icehouse, with its glass floor providing glimpses of the well-stocked wine cellar b

Situated near the Mercato delle Erbe (well worth a visit either before or after your meal), this restaurant changes its menu regularly, sometimes even daily, in order to guarantee the freshness of its farm-to-table ingredients. The simple cuisine features some delicious vegetarian dishes, including stand-out recipes such as fennel with coconut and green pepper sauce. Don’t miss the home-made bread, which is baked daily with great technical skill.

Under the majestic vaulted ceiling of Palazzo Dondini Ghiselli and in the shade of an old plane tree, this restaurant combines a simple ambience with an innovative concept. Here, guests can enjoy typical seafood dishes from Romagna – don’t miss the delicious sardines sautéed in oil and lemon, which are a real treat!

It’s well worth heading off the traditional tourist trail to experience this simple and informal trattoria in Bolognina, the city’s historic working-class district which now has a very multicultural feel. Run by a friendly owner, with his talented business partner at the helm in the kitchen, the restaurant boasts a welcoming and friendly ambience that has made it popular, so booking ahead is recommended, even at lunchtime. Top-quality regional cuisine is celebrated here, from fresh pasta (excellent tortellini in broth) to zuppa inglese (a type of trifle).

This restaurant in the lively Mercato delle Erbe district has an entrance adorned with hundreds of stickers, giving it the appearance of a record shop rather than a contemporary-style eatery with a bar counter and a highly original surfboard table near the entrance. The modern cuisine has its roots in the region yet also includes skilfully prepared dishes from around the world (we highly recommend the Bolognese ramen, which includes tagliolino in a mushroom broth, with parmesan, quail eggs marinated in balsamic vinegar, and spinach). There’s also a choice of cocktails to start or round off you

Trattoria da Me

Emilian, Contemporary

€€

Lively and much frequented, this trattoria guided by the energetic Elisa owes its success to a well-judged balance between dishes of the tradition – with fresh pastas prepared by the sfogline and also available for purchase in the adjoining shop – and offerings that draw upon more contemporary techniques. Among the specialities not to be missed are the tagliolini with friggione and squacquerone cream: a thoroughly satisfying and well-balanced dish. For those drawn to the flavours of another age, Sunday is the day to seek out the classic lasagne alla bolognese on the menu, prepared according to

"After leaving the lobby of the luxurious Grand Hotel Majestic, you come to the restaurant, adorned by a 17th century fresco from the Carracci school. This is the restaurant for grand occasions and, under the guidance of chef Agostino Schettino, also for outstanding cuisine. From Castellammare di Stabia in Campania, the chef presents a menu featuring a succession of references to the cuisines of Emilia and Naples: two of Italy's most renowned culinary traditions sit at the same table to create a truly extraordinary result. Although it calls itself a trattoria, this restaurant situated in a narrow street in the city centre has an elegant ambience, welcoming guests with friendly service and serving an equal balance of meat and fish dishes. Our inspector particularly enjoyed the foie gras sautéed with Lambrusco blueberries and pan brioche, and the “finché c’è bottarga c’è speranza” (“while there’s bottarga, there’s hope”) spaghetti served with tuna tartare, mullet roe, lime and pistachios.
