Enrico Sablotny and Lukas Winkelmann, the duo who run this little restaurant, are from the Ruhr Valley – hence the name! In the kitchen, first-rate ingredients are transformed into distinctly original, creative compositions. Skilfully combined flavours and harmoniously balanced contrasts are particularly evident in dishes such as "Crevette rose, young almonds, fig leaf & fermented asparagus" and "Miéral pigeon, radicchio, elderberries & liver bread". The carte blanche set menu never fails to surprise. Excellent service comes courtesy of very attentive, competent and charming waitstaff, contrib

"The Art of Taste" is the name of Daniel Gottschlich's new concept. In a six-course set menu, he creatively combines the tastes "salty", "sweet", "bitter", "fatty", "sour" and "umami", which are introduced in a "black box" with six small amuse-bouches served beforehand. This is imaginative cuisine that draws on regional specialities such as Halve Hahn (traditional Rhenish fare comprising rye bread and cheese). Another highlight is the "Mackerel" dish, inspired by Caesar salad and featuring a combination of tender yellowtail mackerel, sturgeon caviar, a tangy Reypenaer cheese cream, dots of fru

In this well-maintained half-timbered house set in an idyllic spot on the banks of the Rhine, chef Thomas Lösche champions a style of cooking that puts top-notch ingredients and craftsmanship centre stage – think Berkshire pork from pigs reared in the Black Forest, excellent calf sweetbreads or aromatic wild-caught sea bass. This is no-frills cuisine that remains true to the authenticity with which this house is synonymous. There is a four- to six-course set menu, from which you can also pick dishes à la carte. The wine list features a good selection of Austrian and German labels. The icing on

Located in Südstadt, a neighbourhood known for its distinctive character, this inviting and easygoing restaurant is very popular and has its fair share of regulars – reservations are advised. Welcoming and lively, it's everything a brasserie should be. The menu, too, is down-to-earth, including mouthwatering options – house-made venison ham, brasserie classics such as duck liver terrine or steak-frites, as well as vegetarian dishes. Tip: Take a punt on the moderately priced surprise menu. Friendly and professional service. Small pavement terrace in front of the building.

Mediterranean Cuisine

Are you in the mood for Mediterranean cuisine with Greek influences? Then try, for example, the fried halibut with a chive beurre blanc and trout caviar or the house-made mezze – to share or as a starter. Good produce is used, including meat from Franz Keller and wild-caught prawns. The place has an appealingly trendy bistro look and a pleasantly relaxed atmosphere. Diners take their seats at regular tables or high tables – the latter offer partial views into the open kitchen. Tip for motorists: public multi-storey car park opposite.

You may not see the cathedral here in Porz-Langel, but you do pretty much have front row seats onto the Rhine! This restaurant serves classic cuisine with seasonal and Mediterranean influences, prepared using decent ingredients, most of which are sourced from the region. You can choose à la carte or put together your own three-course menu for a set price. The friendly staff also have plenty of good wine recommendations up their sleeve, drawing on the decent selection with a focus on Austria and Germany.
