Musaafer
Indian, Contemporary · ★ Michelin

Dinner in a shopping mall doesn’t sound promising, unless you’re headed to Musaafer. The sheer scale of this grand hall, with its arches, towering windows, labyrinth-like layout and elaborate patterns, feels like a palace of its own. The setting is as thrilling as the food, with different menus reflecting the chef's travels around India. A crisp, delicate achappam is a lovely opener before scallop ceviche with green apple cilantro water. A short rib taco adds a little fun but do order the Malabari fish curry with a light and fluffy paratha. Desserts are delicate, subtle and skillful. The atten

With burnt orange banquettes, handsome tile floors and a covered patio that looks out across West University, this cozy charmer is more than just a watering hole for refreshing margaritas and chilled lagers. The finely curated menu is packed with delicious ideas inspired by both Texan and Mexican traditions. Tortillas are nixtamalized and pressed in-house so start with a mushroom taco loaded with tempura-fried mushrooms and a sunflower seed chili crisp. Other hits include roasted oysters with green garlic butter, grilled cucumbers with charred jalapeño yogurt, and a superb smoked pork chop bur

Creative, Mediterranean Cuisine · ★ Michelin

This ambitious atelier sets its sights on a culinary exploration of the Mediterranean, studiously delving into individual regions one by one, from the Maghreb in Northwest Africa to Murcia and Andalusia in Southern Spain, to Greece, with a tasting menu and beverage program inspired by each cuisine in turn. But if all that sounds a bit precious, rest assured that the experience itself is utterly disarming, with a winning sense of hospitality that makes for a meal that is both engaging and luxe. Guests start with finely tuned cocktails and first bites in the stylish lounge area before being whis

Note: Temporarily closedTrue to its name, this dark, intimate space is sealed off from the strip mall outside—but when it comes to its reputation for a showy, immersive experience, the secret is certainly out. In the care of Chef Marcos Juarez, this 18-seat counter features a wide array of premium seafood prepared with a unique approach that bucks tradition. Chefs happily engage with diners, explaining each of the courses. Nigiri is at the heart of this meal, featuring fish aged in-house, and may include toro, uni and plump mussels. A home away from home, this Montrose favorite is impossible to resist. Set in a charming 1930s bungalow and decorated with vinyl records, the restaurant is as cozy as they come with a staff that treats you like a regular. The food impresses, at once creative and familiar. You could fill up entirely on the superb dilly milk bread with “everything butter” but then you’d miss any one of the creative vegetable offerings like grilled carrots with a coconut curry and peanut sesame crunch. The menu's tempting choices make decision-making difficult, but know that there must be pie, all of which are ba

Few smokehouses celebrate the city’s diverse cultural footprint quite like this one, where Texas barbecue traditions merge with Chinese, Vietnamese and Korean flavors. Where else will you find banh mi with pho-rubbed beef belly, a swipe of garlic aioli, chicken liver pâté? How many pitmasters glaze their ribs in gochujang? Classic offerings of brisket and ribs satisfy, but the restaurant’s heart lives in the daily specials, which change with great frequency. Take a look around: A nearby table (indoors or out) will always have a dish you wish you had ordered. How’s the brisket fried rice? What

This Vietnamese-inspired restaurant in Houston’s Autry Park is elegant without ever feeling over the top. The dining room is bright and airy, with lots of white, soft cream and beige tones, cozy booths and large tables. This is an elevated but approachable menu threaded with French influences. The portions lean large, making it an ideal place to bring a date or a group of friends. A salad of Thai mango and chilled shrimp is a refreshing start before savory dishes like shaking filet mignon or pan-fried branzino. Served whole over a bed of vegetables, it's served with a classic nước chấm sauce fo

The name and the flavors alike are punchy at this inviting Montrose favorite, with stylish design and cool, laid-back charm. As an opening volley in a barrage of hospitality, guests are welcomed with a splash of bubbles when they sit, perhaps as an enticement to explore the rest of the impressive wine list. All this is icing on the cake for a crowd-pleasing menu that focuses on a wood-fired oven, from a zingy salad of charred beans to a crisp, gooey focaccia di recco filled with robiola cheese and mortadella—not to mention praiseworthy pizzas and pastas. Speaking of dessert, a meal here is sca
