After a successful stint at two-star restaurant 7132 Silver in Vals, Mitja Birlo has made the move to Zurich. In an impressive building next to the main train station – a prime city-centre location – he presents a cosmopolitan culinary concept that is truly one of a kind. In a relaxed, modern and elegant setting, diners take their seats on comfortable bar chairs at the counter right next to the open kitchen to observe the numerous exciting delicacies comprising the surprise menu being created – with the dishes explained by the chefs themselves. As well as drawing on fairtrade and organic produce, the chefs source ingredients locally wherever possible. The result is bold, flavour-rich dishes replete with interesting culinary combinations. Chef Julian Marti showcases his signature style in creations such as his wonderfully creamy risotto-style spelt with smoked eel, Swiss chard and dill – fantastic! The food takes the form of a four- to seven-course set menu – a vegan version is available by prior arrangement. In keeping with the modern cuisine, the dining space of this small restaurant on a corner plot has an appealingly minimalist de

In the chic fine dining restaurant of the luxurious Widder boutique hotel, chef Stefan Heilemann and his team skilfully bridge the gap between classic and modern, drawing on international influences. Thoughtful preparation and precise technique go into the elegant dishes. The set menu starts as it means to go on, with a veritable explosion of flavours, in the form of light bites such as a fluffy bao bun filled with pulled goulash and amuse-bouches including tender, delicately sweet Algarve prawns with a refined cauliflower foam and crispy frosted herb pearls. Andreas Caminada is the man behind this fabulous venture in the Marktgasse Hotel, located in the heart of the historical district on the right bank of the River Limmat. The beautiful, classically styled bar (perfect for pre-dinner drinks) leads into the elegantly appointed restaurant, designed by Patricia Urquiola. The set menu is devised for sharing. Chef Daniel Zeindlhofer remains true to the IGNIV philosophy while incorporating his own ideas. The focus is on both his technical skill and the outstanding ingredients. The numerous small dishes are meticulously crafted without unnecessary embel

Tucked away in an inner courtyard is Franz (the name is derived from the female-forward concept of "Frauen im Zentrum"), a space dedicated to culture, work and food. The latter is to be had here at Wirtschaft im Franz, in the form of a cleverly devised surprise menu comprising four, five or six courses. Modern and seasonal dishes such as "Beetroot, leek, mustard seed, horseradish" are pleasingly pared back and creative without being fussy. The emphasis is on the quality of the produce, with vegetables taking centre stage. Information on the ingredients used and their provenance is listed on th

Zineb ("Zizi") Hattab offers something truly out of the ordinary in her charming pub-style eatery. Not only is her creative modern cuisine entirely vegan, but it also draws on fascinating Moroccan and Mexican influences. The dishes are straightforward and unfussy; here, it is all about flavour and soul. The chef – born in Spain and the daughter of Moroccan immigrants – grew up on the Costa Brava. Originally an engineer, she followed her passion for cooking and cut her teeth working with the likes of Andreas Caminada in Switzerland and at the Mexican restaurant Cosme in New York. The lively atmosphere here is reminiscent of a modern gastropub. Thanks to its really friendly, down-to-earth service and relaxed setting, this place is ideal for lunch with friends or an enjoyable dinner. Under the guidance of Fabian Fuchs, vegetarian dishes – sometimes even vegan – are prepared in the open kitchen. The dining experience is centred on sharing – three to four dishes from the seasonal menu per person is about right. The flavoursome dishes are made with carefully selected vegetables, such as aubergine with miso, wasabi sesame and cashew, or Pizokel (buckwheat dumplings), Périgor

This place has all the makings of a cherished favourite restaurant! Tucked away in a courtyard, it has a pleasingly vibrant and laid-back atmosphere. Closely spaced tables and Turkish background music add to the bustling feel. In the open kitchen, modern Turkish dishes are prepared: expect dishes packed with bold flavours and sometimes with a touch of heat. Shining examples of dishes made using the grill and wood-fired oven, which play a major role, include mini lahmacun (freshly baked bread with lamb, yoghurt cream and onions) and manti (potato ravioli with yoghurt, salca butter and parsley).
