This characterful farmstead, just a hop from the centre of Saint Truiden, is the epitome of warm and friendly. Chef Raf truly loves his work, as his huge smile reveals when you enter the property. The score keeps pace with the seasons and champions Flemish traditions, tweaked with subtle contemporary notes. An example: fork-tender breast of duckling with legs grilled on the barbecue, flanked by asparagus, frothy potato mousseline and a knockout gravy spiked with tarragon. Generosity and authenticity are the name of the game, underscored by inspired food-beer pairings that you can trust with yo

As you explore the oldest town of Belgium, we recommend venturing down this pretty pedestrian lane to number 25. You will first be surprised by the elegant modernity of the interior, rich in cosy details and designer touches. After An has graciously seated you at your table, Jan Menten rolls out his creative talents. Premium ingredients like langoustine and Anjou pigeon reveal all their complexity thanks to consummate traditional technique. The chef adds an unexpected twist to familiar flavours with subtle touches and side dishes of Mediterranean inspiration. He cooks monkfish in a noisette bu

Alter means “different” or “other”, which illustrates Jo Grootaers’ career. He was just 19 when he became the chef of the Altermezzo brasserie, gradually forging his own culinary signature to the point of being awarded a Michelin star. Today he and his partner, Lana in charge of the front-of-house, are at the helm of this restaurant, established in the former village school, which has been treated to a hip, designer makeover. The couple’s shared passion can be tasted in the fine wines and remarkably delicate, creative cuisine. The chef’s attention to detail and genuine passion for the ingredie

Philippe Fauchet
Creative, Seasonal Cuisine · ★ Michelin
€€€€
Philippe Fauchet enjoys straying from his comfort zone and since 1996, he has been finetuning his distinctive signature in this snug yet buzzy eatery deep in the Liege countryside. An artisan at heart, he crafts everything from scratch, including the succulent bread. While impossible to sum up in a single word, let’s say his style is quirky and scattered with international accents, but always with a firm focus on local ingredients and veggies, thanks to partnerships with regional farmers. His dad’s market garden also frequently supplies the kitchen in veg and herbs. All of which is combined in

Ogst is the epitome of charming. A natural, Scandinavian-inspired decor sets the warm, casual scene in which you instantly feel at home. Sébastien Wygaerts bowls us over with fresh produce and attention to detail, depicted by elegant plating, cleverly devised recipes and gutsy flavours. The chef fashions distinctive dishes thanks to fresh and acidic nuances, including the occasional exotic tang and doesn’t hesitate to stray from well-trodden culinary paths as he tries out original recipes. Examples include tartare of beef with finely diced watermelon, a fresh, acidic emulsion, oil of capers an

Welcome to the lair of the Catania family. Filippo welcomes patrons to a smart restaurant flanked by a lovely garden terrace. Chef Roberta, his partner, conjures up a feast of pedigree Italian classics with a modern spin. She has a preference for simplicity, creating intense flavours steeped in Mediterranean exuberance, illustrated by taglioni al dente served with a peppery velvet parmesan sauce, crispy pancetta, a 63° boiled egg and a lavish grating of truffle. You may be interested to know that sgroppino sorbet (vodka, prosecco and lemon) is served before the main course. As for the titbits

Good food has no need of fancy fussy frills, as Wim Schildermans so masterfully illustrates. In a tastefully restored manor house that has lost none of its period charm, this creative maestro rolls out his “Just Eat Right” concept. First of all, he sources top-drawer, preferably local ingredients, and then deploys his consummate skill and talent. Chef Schildermans cooks boldly and has no qualms about surprising diners, illustrated by fillet of venison, served rare and underscored by a big-boned gravy enhanced with delicate and subtly vibrant Timut pepper. This is paired with marinated red beet

Restaurant Aurum
French, Modern Cuisine
€€€€
Kasteel Van Ordingen, a Michelin key, is home to a romantic restaurant, Aurum, that mingles medieval charm and intimacy. Classicism reigns throughout, albeit in an updated culinary version. Seafood and local produce are the stars of this contemporary, refined score. The chef may exalt chicory from Scherpenheuvel with layers of textured cheese and mushrooms; he is also equally capable of concocting creative desserts that revolve around pumpkins, laced with coffee and vanilla. His multi-faceted recipes never fail to keep us on our toes. We recommend checking out the special deals and packages to
