The journey here is an experience in itself: At 6.30pm, diners are picked up from the main car park by golf cart and chauffeured to this restaurant located on the expansive grounds of the Kokerei Hansa industrial heritage site. In keeping with the name, which refers to coal – known as "black gold", the decor here in the basement of an old gas storage features an elegant black and gold colour scheme. Led by Pierre Beckerling, the kitchen team serves up a modern and very creative take on Ruhr Valley cuisine that, while clearly labour-intensive, adheres to a distinct flavour identity. Setting the

Shiraz is housed in Wuppertal's oldest inn, on the grounds of Gut Einern. Charming historical details such as walls made of clay, straw and wooden beams, showcased behind glass, and the heritage-protected bar have been successfully integrated into this elegant and upscale little restaurant. In the kitchen, chef Reyad Danah thoughtfully marries classic European cuisine with the Middle Eastern flavours of his native Syria, giving dishes like sole with tomato beurre blanc, spinach, couscous and tarragon or banana with vanilla, date and whey a unique signature. He is passionate about cooking up traditional, seasonal cuisine that draws on locally sourced ingredients. The extensive menu is extremely appealing, making it difficult to choose. In addition to the fairly priced set menu ("Heimatmenü"), there are also classics such as bouillabaisse or Wiener schnitzel, as well as weekly specials that change with the seasons and dishes for two or more people. Wine connoisseurs will find plenty to enjoy here, and all reasonably priced. The f
