The tasting menu changes four times a year based on the seasons: in winter the undisputed protagonists are mushrooms and truffles together with winged game, while in springtime they are early vegetables. Dinner is a sensational journey among classic creations made with special care and other more modern creations with an original flavor, as well as several varieties of bread baked in an adjacent bakery. The wine list is outstanding: the different regions of Italy are well represented, without however neglecting Europe and America. Considering the great attention paid to tea (from Chine, Japan

Pod Zidom Bistro

Farm to table, Mediterranean Cuisine

A modern-style bistro with a wine bar and small attractive outdoor space in the city centre, just behind the main square with fine views of the cathedral. The chef, who describes his cuisine as “market-fresh”, makes daily visits to the nearby Dolac market for his ingredients, which include seasonal vegetables and meat reared on local farms. The owner is passionate about wine, and includes several Croatian wines made from native grape varieties on the wine list, which also pays close attention to organic labels.

Situated in a small courtyard belonging to Zagreb’s youth theatre (ZKM), this young, lively restaurant boasts a bold colour scheme and retro furnishings, with an open-view kitchen and a veranda (the best seats are here). The extensive menu features classic French and Italian dishes alongside more creative options that pay tribute to local cuisine. Starters include fresh fish from the Adriatic, while the Beef Wellington is considered to be one of the chef’s specialities. The excellent wine list includes labels from all over Croatia – make sure you ask for recommendations. Don’t miss the charmin

Situated in the oldest, most visited part of Zagreb, this quiet, well-run restaurant welcomes guests with an entire wall covered with plants and flowers that symbolise the Medvednica, the mountain chain to the north of the capital that inspires the cuisine served here. With a focus on local, mostly organic ingredients, dishes are colourful and creative, aiming to awaken the senses by introducing a range of different flavours (sweet, acidic, bitter etc). The sommelier will happily recommend Croatian wines to accompany your meal, while the service is enthusiastic, friendly and attentive. Make su

A new location not far from the previous one, still in the city centre. The venue is cosy and contemporary, with a simple style; at the back is the classic counter with stools. The cuisine remains unchanged: Japanese, between classical references and modern interpretations, with a predilection for Nikkei cuisine, which blends Japanese and Peruvian flavours. The bar offers original cocktails and signature drinks.

You ring the doorbell to gain access to this restaurant, where just five tables and an open-view kitchen create an intimate and welcoming ambience that deliberately gives the impression of dining in chef Tvrtko Šakota’s own home. The seasonal ingredients in the dishes here are sourced from the restaurant’s own farm, situated 40km from Zagreb. The chef chooses the dishes and Croatian wines served on his surprise tasting menu, where the focus is on small-scale producers who farm in accordance with traditional biodynamic methods. The cuisine takes guests on a creative and personalised journey thr

Located in the city center, yet in a quiet spot within a courtyard, this elegant and welcoming family-run restaurant offers a seafood cuisine with Mediterranean flavors and a distinctly Italian touch. All the pasta is homemade, and the advice is to save some room for the delicious desserts. The wine list features numerous interesting labels from across Europe.

Housed in one of the best hotels in the city, this elegant yet informal all-day bistro has become one of Zagreb’s most popular meeting places and is ideal for a simple snack and aperitif, as well as a full meal. The menu features meat, fish and plenty of vegetables, with a focus on local ingredients and the occasional French influence. Make sure you try the iconic Esplanade Štrukli, pasta filled with cheese and cooked au gratin, a house speciality since 1951. An excellent selection of wines by the glass completes the picture.
