Nozawa Bar
Japanese, Sushi · ★ Michelin
$$$$
Nozawa Bar is secreted away in the back of the Beverly Hills location of Sugarfish, yet this jewel box is entirely independent of the local chain it's housed within. Omakase is the sole dining option here, served as multiple courses of nigiri along with some sashimi and handrolls. Each sequence centers on exceptional seafood, most of it sourced from local waters. The menu features both tradition and novelty. Start with the perfectly crunchy jellyfish dressed with ponzu. This might be followed by an impressive presentation of deliciously tender slivered octopus. Sushi highlights include the del

Somni
Contemporary, Spanish · ★★★ Michelin

Chef Aitor Zabala and his dedicated team have awakened Somni, Catalan for "dream," from a long sleep and have fashioned this revamped iteration as a distinctly personal and unique dining experience. Tucked away just off Santa Monica Avenue, the dining room's soothing, creamy palette with light wood and glass is marked by a colorful bull's head from the original spot, hinting at the Spanish-inflected cuisine. A procession of small bites is meticulously arranged and endlessly creative, sating diners with an abundance of rich flavors and textural interplay (think mussel escabeche, gazpacho, or th

Light streams in through the windows of this tranquil family affair in Little Ethiopia where a congenial team oversees a simply adorned setting that feels like a humble abode. They are content to let the food do the talking and offer a colorful selection of Ethiopian classics with vegetables and meat alike arriving on oversized silver platters lined with injera. Best shared with a group, the "veggie utopia" offers immediate insight into their talents, spotlighting lentils seasoned with berbere and turmeric. Finely chopped kitfo is something of a house specialty and the spicy Somali variation,

Vespertine

Chef Jordan Kahn's singular operation is tucked inside a strikingly futuristic edifice of red steel aptly named “The Waffle.” The bold, stark setting is a proper stage for this highly creative restaurant where diners enjoy a tasting menu that is equally out of the ordinary. Each dish is visually stunning, with cuisine that is not only daringly inventive (at times downright whimsical), but also marshals finely honed technique and impeccably balanced flavors, as in an artful dish of scallop with passionfruit, ají amarillo and petals of horseradish tuile, or a bowl studded with countless edible f

Pizzeria Sei

Thick or thin. Sauced or left bare. Traditional or irreverent. Pizza is the shape-shifter of the culinary world, with seemingly endless variations and an insatiable appetite for the newest iteration. Enter Pizzeria Sei, where individual pies are made with a Japan-meets-Italy flair. A handful of diners perch at the counter to watch the chefs hard at work prepping these savory treats. Wondering where the Japanese comes into play? It's the cornicione—with its trademark puffy pinch with a mochi-like chew. White pies are more offbeat, as in the Bismarck topped with a poached egg, while red pies lea

Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo opened the original location of this easygoing Italian-American café in 2015, and it’s been busy-busy ever since. The slender room is soaked in sun thanks to the skylights and features a long counter that stretches the length of the open kitchen. The team works the wood-fired grill and blazing oven with ease, the servers are on point, and even after all these years, the food is as charming as ever. There are plenty of pizzas, all of them with lightly charred edges and topped with everything from smoked ham to vodka sauce. But don’t slouch on the rest of the menu, lik

Securing a reservation is no easy task, but once inside this intimate, wonderfully stylish room, you’ll find a warm and graceful dining experience. The finely suited and hospitable team are an extension of Chef Niki Nakayama, who presents her interpretation of kaiseki by drawing upon seafood, meat, and produce sourced mostly across Japan and California. Ever changing, the coursed tasting weaves together delicate, aromatic broths with heartier fare like grilled Miyazaki wagyu and scallops all seasoned with a generally light touch. The only dish to never leave the menu is an artful twirl of al d

This whimsical, immersive space is a touch otherworldly, with its tangled greenery, moody lighting, and trance-y soundtrack, but guests will be happy to fall under its spell when they taste Chef Jordan Kahn’s singular cuisine. Primal live-fire cooking combines with a zero-waste ethos and a treasure trove of sustainably sourced wild and organic ingredients to create dishes that are as memorable as they are delicious. Charred yam with a buttery sauce accented with smoked trout roe and grilled hazelnuts is more than the sum of its parts, and a dish of honey-grilled Sue Buxton scallops is sided by
