The French Laundry

Contemporary, French · ★★★ Michelin

Thomas Keller’s legendary destination still doesn’t miss a beat. In fact this may be known as the greatest cooking space in America, as every aspect is carefully determined—from the counter height to the flowing lines of the ceiling. Chef Keller continues to pair classic French techniques with wildly fresh ingredients in a setting that is a perfect storm of restaurant greatness—we should all be so lucky to score a reservation here. The cornet filled with crème fraîche and topped with Atlantic salmon tartare is an impressive start before moving on to dishes like Atlantic pompano amandine, sweet

Ciccio

Italian, Pizza · Bib

A pleasant contrast to the sleek new spots around town, this dining room's country-style curtains and front porch are a ticket to another era—and a hot ticket at that, since tables are hard to come by. Indeed, this Yountville gem could pass off as a John Wayne film set, with its wood-framed, 1916-era grocery look. Blistered, puffy crusts boast a tangy flavor of fermentation and a hint of smoke from the fire, an excellent vehicle for hearty toppings like crispy cabbage leaves paired with thinly sliced pancetta and melty gouda. House-made pasta, like chitarra with 'nduja sausage, clams and pea t

Kenzo

Japanese · ★ Michelin

$$$$

Focused on an offering of enticing seasonal Japanese cuisine, Kenzo Tsujimoto's downtown Napa dining room is a place to wash away worldly cares. Designed by his wife Natsuko, this space is serene and minimal. The best seats are at the long counter, where diners can chat with the chefs and watch their meal being prepared. The kaiseki experience is composed, elegantly paced and may feature dishes such as steamed scallop dumpling in a fragrant dashi made with three-year-aged katsuobushi, or seared A5 Wagyu tenderloin with burdock root miso. Desserts, like their honey ice cream topped with candied

Ad Hoc

American

$$$

If you’ve ever wondered how Thomas Keller cooks at home, Ad Hoc is your best bet. The most casual of Chef Keller’s restaurants, it offers accessible fare served family style in a bright and inviting wood-paneled room that feels like a country home, one fitted with an iconic blue awning. Waits are inevitable without a reservation, but the engaging staff keep things moving along. The food is worth the wait and while dishes may sound simple, the crafting is not. Vibrant salads can feature the likes of green asparagus, cauliflower and beets. Buttermilk fried chicken is a longstanding signature. Fr

Bouchon

French

$$$

This may be quaint Yountville, but Thomas Keller's French bistro paints a scene that is straight out of Paris. Red velvet booths, marble tables, polished brass and a tiled floor make for a buzzy scene. The next-door bakery is equally busy with its own lines often stretching out the front door. True to form, the cooking is righteously, unapologetically indulgent. Salade Lyonnaise studded with bacon lardons, flat iron steak with French fries, mussels steamed with white wine, boudin blanc with potato puree — the classics are well accounted for. Finish strong with profiteroles matched with vanilla

The space, at the edge of the villa-like expanse of the luxury hotel of the same name, is relaxed and airy. It is an ideal wine country retreat.Seafood specialties, like mussels with chardonnay butter sauce and grilled bread, or oysters on the half shell with house-made hot sauce, are a highlight. Slow-fermented wood-fired pizzas are always a good idea, and pastas, like a traditional tagliatelle bolognese, show equal care. For dessert, a caramel budino made with Macallan Scotch, paired with pistachio and chantilly cream, strikes a sophisticated and satisfying note.

At this iconic roadhouse, it’s a joy to eat your greens. Chef Cindy Pawlcyn is a wine country pioneer for incorporating onsite gardens that produce ingredients routinely seen on this seasonal menu. There’s something for everyone on this friendly menu: Vibrant salads, grilled fish and steaks, or even a smoked barbecue pork sandwich. A side of onion rings isn’t a bad idea either. The lemon-lime tart capped with brown sugar meringue fittingly described on the menu as “ridiculously tall” doesn’t disappoint. Not surprisingly, there’s often a wait during lunch. The wine list is worth an exploration

La Toque

Chef Ken Frank has been a Napa Valley mainstay ever since he opened this fine-dining lair in the Westin Verasa hotel in 2008. Walk under an oversized inflatable chef’s hat hanging above the entrance and into the elegant room, where you can first glimpse into the gleaming open kitchen and see a brigade of chefs running about. Leather-topped tables, a fireplace and an extensive wine list offer creature comforts to a crowd that’s usually here to celebrate. Though pricey and at times diminutive, the signature tasting menu takes broad culinary cues. Highlights include roasted rack of lamb with Red
