Neolokal

Turkish, Modern Cuisine · ★ Michelin

Neolokal bridges the gap between old and new. Respect for Turkish culinary traditions provides the foundation on which this restaurant is able to constantly renew itself. Flavours from the past are the mainstay here, reimagined with contemporary ideas and techniques. Maksut Aşkar and his young team preserve their culinary heritage and guide it into the future with their exciting cuisine. This commitment extends to environmental responsibility, with a vegetarian menu, using carefully selected local produce (including fine Turkish wines!) and working with nearby suppliers. Chef Aşkar puts his st

Mikla's New Anatolian Kitchen combines respect for tradition with a sense of innovation. The restaurant is an ambassador for the producers they work with, as well as for the great diversity of produce that Turkey has to offer. The chefs use only the finest ingredients (and wines!), which take pride of place in original dishes that are stripped of unnecessary fuss. Everything here revolves around the depth of the flavours, which possess a distinctive Nordic purity. The dishes are not overly elaborate, but their complexity lies in their delicate harmonies. As an example, smoked duck breast is bar

Take the stairs to the first floor above the Egyptian bazaar and marvel at the characteristically Turkish decor with its blue mosaics on the walls and its historical cachet. In addition to the main dining space, there are two more private rooms if you would prefer a more intimate setting. The chef resolutely sticks to traditional Turkish dishes: think fragrant dolmas stuffed with rice, berries, pine nuts and a dash of vinegar, or courgette flower filled with feta, deep-fried and paired with a rich and spicy yoghurt dip, to name but a few. This perennial favourite never disappoints!

This restaurant is named after Agnés Marthe Nicole, one of the Franciscan nuns and owners who lived here in the early 20C. A series of narrow lanes leads to the building, which, as you will see, has undergone major renovations. At the entrance, you are greeted by works of modern art. On the top floor, the elegance and luxury of the place is taken up a notch – and the view of the old town from here is fabulous. Exquisite dishes and the well-heeled clientele show that this fine dining restaurant is of the highest calibre. The chef revamps traditional recipes from all over Turkey, adding delicate

A narrow street leads you to this somewhat hidden gem. The waterside setting is a draw in itself, but the main attractions are the barbecue and tandoori oven. With a sure hand, the chefs flame-grill aubergine, for example, and then season it with chilli and five-spice powder. Their marinated lamb and beef are cooked to juicy perfection, generously spiced and served with lavash bread that has been briefly crisped up on the barbecue. The various mezze, salads and desserts such as halva stay true to tradition. And for this price point, the value is fantastic!

If you want to experience a contemporary side of Istanbul, then head to the eighth floor of Hotel Momento. Its large windows afford views of the city's historical skyline (there is an even better view from the ninth-floor terrace!), and the decor is sleek and stylish. The menu revolves around mezze, kebabs and barbecued lamb dishes. You can watch the chefs at work in the open kitchen, skilfully blending spices and smoky flavours and presenting each dish with impeccable care. For instance, Turkish bread is served with juicy lamb kebab grilled over an open flame, accompanied by creamy yoghurt, p

Intensely flavoursome taramasalata with toasted bread, crispy filo pastry stuffed with beef alongside a sweet tomato sauce for dipping, sea bass elevated by a spicy mustard-based remoulade – the menu boasts an impressive array of mezze, dishes for sharing and other traditional specialities that prove utterly irresistible. The chef uses top-quality ingredients and avoids unnecessary complexity. His dishes pack a punch, with subtle Greek influences appearing throughout. A stroll through the trendy Çukurcuma neighbourhood, which is famous for its antique shops, should certainly include a meal at Cuma. At this cosy establishment – be sure to secure a spot on the front terrace – you can tuck into a traditional Turkish breakfast or Mediterranean-style lunch or dinner. Seasonal ingredients are showcased brilliantly in tapas such as sea bass ceviche, generously topped pizzettas, aromatic pasta dishes etc. The chef places special emphasis on vegetarian dishes, such as mushroom skewers and halloumi cheese with braised onion, pomegranate and deep-fried polenta.
