Bib Gourmand 1

L'Essentiel

Bib Gourmand€€Modern Cuisine

Nestled at the foot of the castle, this beautiful tuffeau-stone house sports charming dining rooms (parquet floors, exposed rafters and bare stone walls) and peaceful little patios. Chef Anthony Vaillant crafts food in the zeitgeist, jazzed up by a scattering of deft creative touches: start with a medley of asparagus and green peas, enhanced by a citrus fruit flavoured dressing followed by fabulously fresh cod flanked by a curry sauce and velvety mashed potato. Extremely attentive service. Regional tipples take pride of place on the wine list. An enjoyable culinary experience!

TripAdvisor review sample · 4.6/5 · 80 reviews

Located in Saumur, L'Essentiel offers modern cuisine with generally high praise for food quality, featuring creative presentations and local ingredients like asparagus and duck. However, some guests noted small portions or bland flavors. Service is typically attentive and professional, with knowledgeable sommeliers, though occasional delays in pacing and wine service were reported. The atmosphere is elegant, suitable for dining, but lacks indoor air conditioning and has limited outdoor seating. Value is considered good, particularly with regional wine pairings, although some found the cost high relative to expectations.

Suitable for travelers seeking modern fine dining and quality wine experiences; reservations are recommended.

La Table du Château Gratien

€€€Modern Cuisine

In the landscaped grounds of the Gratien and Meyer wine estate, this adorable late 19C château oozes character and cachet – herringbone parquet, glittering chandeliers and a fireplace. The cuisine deftly showcases the region's fine produce – white asparagus, black truffle and Val de Loire potatoes. Herbs from the garden, excellent home-made bread, warm madeleines served with coffee. A taste of the good life.

Located in a castle within a Saumur vineyard, La Table du Château Gratien offers a scenic setting with terrace views. The modern cuisine features refined dishes like foie gras and quail, praised by some for flavor and presentation, while others find them tasteless or under-portioned. Service is polarizing; many appreciate the warm welcome and expert advice, whereas complaints cite cold attitudes, poor training, and erratic pacing. Value perceptions vary, with some finding prices reasonable and others deeming them unjustified. The restaurant suits couples seeking a romantic atmosphere and high-quality gastronomy, though diners should be aware of inconsistent service standards.

Suitable for couples or food enthusiasts seeking a romantic atmosphere and refined French cuisine.
