Where to Base
The modern town of New Sukhothai (Sukhothai Thani) is the recommended base for most travelers. As the provincial capital, it offers a wider selection of hotels, reliable dining options, and easier access to transportation services like taxis and rental bikes. Staying here ensures convenience for daily needs. Alternatively, boutique guesthouses located within or immediately adjacent to the Sukhothai Historical Park offer an immersive atmosphere. However, these locations may have limited evening service options, so verify transport availability for returning to the town center.
Getting Around & Arrival
Sukhothai does not have its own commercial airport. Travelers typically fly into Chiang Mai (CNX) or Bangkok (BKK/DMK) and transfer via bus or minivan. Once in Sukhothai, the primary mode of transport for exploring the Sukhothai Historical Park is renting a bicycle, which allows flexible access to the dispersed temple ruins. For moving between the historical park and the new town, local taxis and tuk-tuks are available. Public transport is limited, so pre-arranging transfers is advisable for frequent flyers on tight schedules.
Best Season
The cool season, from November to February, offers the most comfortable weather for visiting Sukhothai. Temperatures are mild, making it ideal for cycling through the extensive Sukhothai Historical Park without excessive heat. This period is also peak tourist season, so advance booking for hotels is recommended. The rainy season (June to October) brings lush greenery but frequent downpours that can disrupt outdoor sightseeing. The hot season (March to May) can be uncomfortably warm for extensive walking or cycling tours.
