Where to Base
It is recommended to stay in boutique hotels or traditional wooden guesthouses within the Old Town. This area allows walking access to major historical sites such as mosques, fountains, and museums, providing an immersive experience. The New Town, located on a plateau about two kilometers west, offers modern amenities for travelers willing to take short transfers.
Getting Around
Safranbolu has no airport; the nearest major hub is Ankara, approximately 200 kilometers away, requiring a 2-3 hour drive. The Old Town features cobblestone streets and slopes, so comfortable footwear is essential. The distance between the Old and New Towns is about two kilometers, accessible by taxi or walking.
Best Season
Spring and autumn offer pleasant weather for exploring outdoor historical sites. Summers are fairly dry, especially in the Old Town which lies in a rain shadow, so sun protection is advised. Winters can be cold in the mountainous region, but the town is quieter. Year-round visits are possible, though weather conditions may affect walking comfort.
