Where to Base
Stay in the modern town of Palenque, which is adjacent to the archaeological zone. This area offers the best concentration of hotels, restaurants, and transport services. Being close to the site entrance allows for early morning visits to the ruins before the heat and crowds peak, maximizing your time at the Temple of the Inscriptions and the Palace.
Getting Around
Palenque does not have a commercial airport. Travelers typically fly into Tapachula or San Cristóbal de las Casas and take a bus or private transfer, which takes approximately 2-3 hours. Once in town, the distance between hotels and the ruins is short; taxis are readily available, and walking is feasible for those staying centrally.
Best Season
The climate is consistently humid with an average temperature of 26°C and high annual rainfall of roughly 2,160 mm. The dry season, typically from November to April, offers the most comfortable conditions for exploring the extensive jungle-covered ruins. Visiting during these months minimizes the impact of heavy rains on your itinerary and outdoor activities.
