Orkney

Orkney is an archipelago off the north coast of Scotland, comprising about 70 islands with 20 inhabited. The largest, Mainland, is the sixth-largest Scottish island. Known for its fertile soils, mild climate, and significant renewable energy output, Orkney offers a unique blend of history and nature. It is home to the 'Heart of Neolithic Orkney', a UNESCO World Heritage Site containing some of Europe's oldest and best-preserved ancient monuments. The islands were colonized by the Norse and later annexed by Scotland in 1472. Visitors can explore rich folklore, distinct Scots dialects, and abundant marine and avian wildlife. Kirkwall serves as the administrative center and main hub for accommodation and transport.

Where to Base

Kirkwall on the Mainland is the recommended base. As the largest settlement and administrative center, it offers the best connectivity for exploring the archipelago and accessing key amenities.

Getting Around

Orkney does not have a standard IATA airport code for commercial flights in this context; access is primarily via ferry connections to mainland Scotland and inter-island links. The mild climate makes driving or using local buses a viable way to navigate the islands.

Best Season

Temperatures average 12°C in summer and 4°C in winter. The relatively mild climate allows for year-round visits, but summer is ideal for outdoor exploration of Neolithic sites and wildlife watching.

Cultural Highlights

Guests can visit the 'Heart of Neolithic Orkney' UNESCO site, reflecting the deep Norse influence and ancient history. The local Orcadian dialect and rich folklore offer a unique cultural experience distinct from mainland Scotland.
