Méribel

Méribel is a premier ski resort nestled in the Tarentaise Valley of the French Alps, comprising three distinct yet neighboring villages: Méribel Centre, Méribel-Mottaret, and Méribel Village. Situated within the Vanoise National Park and forming a key part of the expansive Les Trois Vallées (Three Valleys) ski domain, Méribel offers a sophisticated blend of traditional Savoyard architecture and modern luxury. The resort is renowned for its harmonious use of wood, stone, and slanted slate roofs, a design philosophy established by its founder, Major Peter Lindsay, to ensure buildings blend seamlessly with the alpine landscape. Historically significant, Méribel served as a subsite for the 1992 Winter Olympics, hosting ice hockey and women's alpine skiing events. Today, it attracts frequent-flyer hotel travelers seeking high-end accommodations amidst world-class skiing. The Three Valleys area boasts over 600 kilometers of marked runs and 180 lifts, providing extensive terrain for skiers of all levels. While the resort previously hosted the Altitude Festival until 2011, it remains a tranquil haven for those prioritizing relaxation and premium hospitality. The central hub sits at approximately 1,400 meters above sea level, offering reliable snow conditions and easy access to cross-country tracks. For hotel guests, the choice between the three villages dictates the experience: Centre offers convenience and nightlife, Mottaret provides a quieter atmosphere with direct slope access, and Village retains a charming, traditional alpine feel.

Before choosing where to stay

Where to Base: Choose Your Village

Méribel Centre offers the most comprehensive amenities, with easy access to ski rentals, dining, and nightlife, making it ideal for those who prefer convenience. Méribel-Mottaret is quieter and provides direct slope access, suitable for skiers wanting immediate mountain entry. Méribel Village retains a traditional alpine charm with a more relaxed atmosphere. Travelers should choose based on their preference for activity levels and proximity to slopes.

Getting Around: Access via Moûtiers

Méribel does not have its own airport. The nearest major transport hub is the town of Moûtiers, which is well-connected by train. Visitors typically fly into Chambéry or Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airports and take a shuttle, bus, or taxi to Moûtiers, followed by a transfer to Méribel. The resort is accessible via road from Moûtiers, with regular shuttle services connecting the various villages within the resort area during the winter season.

Best Season: Winter Sports Focus

Winter is the peak season, leveraging the vast Les Trois Vallées ski system with over 600 kilometers of marked runs. The resort's infrastructure and hotel offerings are primarily geared towards winter sports enthusiasts. While summer activities like hiking and mountain biking are available, the core appeal remains alpine skiing. The legacy of hosting 1992 Winter Olympics events adds historical significance to the destination, attracting visitors interested in Olympic heritage sites.

More festive in the evenings. Follow in the footsteps of Jules Verne!

La Coursive des Alpes

Restaurant€€€814 m

Welcome to the ski resort’s former cinema, with a lounge bar on the ground-floor for snacks and a drink, and the restaurant proper laid out around a mezzanine of galleries. Chef Laurent Hillairet cooks noon and evening, 7/7, rolling out a modern, tasty, deftly crafted score. Sweetbread is the house signature, but their vitello tonnato paired with harissa seasoning, carrots and parmesan or the almost ethereal raclette of soft brioche bread and the ‘7 hour’ confit of beef à la royale are definitely recommended. The rice pudding with confit pears, grilled almonds and vanilla ice cream is just too
