Where to Base
The town largely serves as an urban center for inhabitants of Kangaita, Kimunye, Kagio, and Karia. Staying in the town center provides convenient access to these surrounding communities and the routes leading north towards Kirinyaga University.
Getting Around
Access via road from Nairobi is through Thika Road past Thika, Kenol, and Makuyu. The route leads through Makutano to Sagana, where a branch heads east towards Kagio town and then north to Kerugoya. Alternatively, drivers can pass through the Plains of Mwea, famous for Eastern Africa's largest rice irrigation scheme, passing numerous Kikuyu communes.
Best Season
The region is accessible year-round. For those interested in agricultural landscapes, the dry seasons offer striking views of the Mwea Rice Irrigation Scheme, providing excellent opportunities for photography and exploring the subsistence farming culture of the local Kikuyu communities.
