Garmisch-Partenkirchen

Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a premier Alpine ski town in Bavaria, southern Germany, renowned as the host of the 1936 Winter Olympics—the first to feature alpine skiing. Situated in the Oberbayern region bordering Austria, it serves as the administrative center of the GAP district. The town is dominated by the nearby Zugspitze, Germany's highest peak at 2,962 meters. For frequent-flyer hotel travelers, this destination offers a unique blend of high-altitude adventure and historic charm. Whether seeking winter sports competitions or summer alpine exploration, the town provides a compact yet vibrant base. Its geography centers around the valley floor, with easy access to both the historic Partenkirchen side and the modern Garmisch side. Travelers can enjoy direct connections to major hubs while immersing themselves in a landscape defined by its dramatic mountain backdrop and rich Olympic heritage.

Before choosing where to stay

Base Selection: Dual Towns

Accommodations are split between Garmisch (more modern, closer to Zugspitze cable cars) and Partenkirchen (historic, near Olympic venues). Both areas offer excellent access to the town center and mountain transport. Choose based on whether you prefer historic charm or convenience to alpine lifts.

Transport: No Direct Airport

There is no local airport. The nearest major hub is Munich Airport (MUC). Train journeys from Munich take approximately 1.5 hours via the scenic route. Driving takes about 1.5 hours via the A95 Autobahn. Frequent flyers should plan ground transport accordingly, as rail links are efficient and connect directly to the town center.

Best Season: Winter Heritage

Winter is ideal for experiencing the town's Olympic legacy, hosting various winter sports competitions. Summer offers access to the Zugspitze for hiking and sightseeing. The town remains cool year-round. Hotel availability can be tight during peak seasons, so early booking is recommended for those seeking alpine sports or mountain scenery.

IKIGAI

Restaurant★★ Michelin€€€€7.5 km

Schloss Elmau is a truly exceptional hideaway, set in a spectacular location surrounded by mountains, forests and meadows. Every ounce of luxury in the hotel and spa finds its culinary match in this restaurant. The Japanese concept of ikigai describes everything that makes life worthwhile. Fine details such as elegant tableware and decorative Japanese kokeshi dolls hint at a deep affinity with Japan – above all, however, this is expressed through the food. Drawing inspiration from his travels, Christoph Rainer consistently integrates Asian and Japanese elements into his creations. A particular

This restaurant, named after the first climber to reach the summit of the Zugspitze, is not just an attractive place where service comes courtesy of very friendly staff; the food here is also delicious. At lunchtime, there is a reasonably priced two-course set menu and a small à la carte menu. In the evening, peruse the large menu, from which you can order either à la carte or a set menu. Hotel Zugspitze also has well-kept guestrooms, should you wish to stay overnight.

Charming dining rooms await behind the painted façade of this inn, which has stood for over 400 years. Here, diners are treated to attentive service as they tuck into classic cuisine. The dishes are packed with flavour and made with good-quality ingredients; attention is paid to seasonality, and a regional produce is given preferential treatment. Started in 1986, the Merget family business continues today, having resumed in 2004 after a brief hiatus.

Much to the delight of his patrons, Andreas Hillejan, originally from the Lower Rhine, found his way to Upper Bavaria some years ago. In the laid-back, down-to-earth atmosphere of his restaurant in the beautiful village of Mittenwald, at the foot of the Karwendel Mountains, he serves up his own refined take on traditional tavern fare – to great acclaim. You can opt for one of two set menus: "Wirtshaus mal anders" ("Tavern fare with a difference") – in either a conventional and a vegetarian version – or the sharing menu for the whole table as a communal dining experience.
