Antakya

Antakya, the modern Turkish form of ancient Antioch, serves as the capital of Hatay Province in southernmost Turkey. Nestled in a fertile valley along the Orontes River, approximately 20 kilometers from the Levantine Sea, the city boasts a rich history as a major Roman metropolis and an influential early center of Christianity. The name 'Christian' first emerged here, and the city held significant ecclesiastical importance during the Byzantine era. Its strategic location led to a complex history of rule by Byzantines, Seljuks, Crusaders, Mamluks, and Ottomans before joining Turkey. Travelers should be aware that on February 6, 2023, the city suffered severe damage from powerful earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaraş. Several neighborhoods were destroyed, historical sites including the Church of St. Paul were lost, and thousands were displaced. With a population of around 400,000, the city is currently in a phase of recovery. Hotel guests are advised to verify the operational status of attractions and infrastructure, as some areas remain affected. The city offers a unique blend of Hellenistic, Roman, and Islamic heritage, but current visits require sensitivity to the ongoing reconstruction efforts and humanitarian situation.

Before choosing where to stay

Where to Base

Given the severe impact of the February 2023 earthquakes, prioritize staying in central districts with restored infrastructure and stable services. Avoid neighborhoods identified as heavily damaged or with limited access. Ensure your accommodation is in a safe, accessible zone to facilitate exploration of the recovering city.

Getting Around

Antakya does not have a major international airport; travelers typically arrive via Hatay Airport or Gaziantep. Local transportation relies on taxis and public transit. Due to post-earthquake changes, some routes may be altered. Verify current transport options and road conditions with your hotel or local authorities before traveling within the city.

Best Season

Spring and autumn offer mild weather, ideal for visiting outdoor historical sites like the remnants of ancient Antioch. Summers are hot, and winters can be rainy. Given the ongoing reconstruction, visiting during temperate seasons ensures better accessibility to sites and a more comfortable experience while supporting the local economy during recovery.
