Getting there & around

From the airport

Sri Guru Ram Das Jee International Airport (ATQ) is the main airport, about 11 km northwest of central Amritsar. For first arrivals, use a prepaid/app taxi or hotel pickup: usually 20-35 minutes to Ranjit Avenue or the Golden Temple area, longer in festival or evening traffic. There is no train or metro rail from the airport. Local buses/autos may run, and airport-Golden Temple MetroBus route 501 has been reported as not currently reliable, so do not plan a tight arrival around it.

Around the city

Amritsar has no metro rail. The city has the Amritsar MetroBus/BRTS network, but routes and operating levels can change; check at the station before relying on it. There is no essential tourist pass. If you will use BRTS often, ask about the MetroBus smart card; otherwise pay single fares. For most visitors, walking works around Heritage Street/Golden Temple, while app taxis and auto-rickshaws are the practical choice between Ranjit Avenue, the station, malls and restaurants. Agree the auto fare before boarding.
