Health
Use safe-water and food precautions; diarrheal illness and waterborne infections are practical risks. Malaria risk is countrywide; dengue and other bite-borne illnesses also occur, so use repellent, covered clothing, screens/AC and bed nets. Avoid freshwater swimming because schistosomiasis is present. Heat, humidity and heavy rains can affect plans; hydrate and avoid peak heat. Altitude illness is not a typical issue for most itineraries, though mountains exist inland.
Vaccinations
Consult a doctor or travel clinic at least a month before travel. Be up to date on routine vaccines such as MMR, polio, tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis, flu, varicella, shingles where eligible, and COVID-19. CDC recommends hepatitis A, hepatitis B, typhoid and yellow fever for Sierra Leone; rabies pre-exposure vaccine may be considered for animal exposure or remote travel. Yellow-fever vaccination certificate is required for all travelers to enter Sierra Leone. Discuss malaria prevention medicine with a clinician.
eSIM / connectivity
Do not assume local eSIM is widely available from Sierra Leone carriers. Main mobile networks include Orange, Africell, QCell and Sierratel, with 3G/4G strongest around Freetown and major towns and weaker in rural areas. For reliable service, many visitors use a registered local prepaid physical SIM/data bundle on arrival; travel eSIM apps may offer Sierra Leone roaming coverage, but check the underlying network and device support before departure. No official, consistently advertised tourist eSIM/data plan was found from the local carriers.
