Staying in Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea (PNG) stands as one of the most culturally and linguistically diverse destinations in Oceania, featuring over 840 spoken languages and rugged, mountainous terrain. The hospitality sector is primarily centered around business accommodations in urban hubs like Port Moresby, complemented by remote eco-lodges catering to adventure travelers. Due to challenging geography, domestic connectivity relies heavily on air transport rather than road networks. While the country offers unparalleled cultural immersion and natural beauty, infrastructure remains developing, requiring travelers to plan meticulously for logistics and safety.

Entry & getting around

Entry & Getting Around

International travelers typically enter via Jacksons International Airport in Port Moresby. Domestic connectivity is predominantly air-based, utilizing small aircraft to link major towns and islands, as overland travel is limited by rugged terrain. Visa requirements should be verified directly with the local consulate, as regulations can change.

Where to Base: City vs. Resort

Accommodation options present a distinct duality. Port Moresby offers the primary selection of international chains and upscale business hotels, ideal for conferences and transit. Remote areas rely on small boutique lodges or eco-resorts that emphasize integration with nature and local culture. Facilities outside urban centers are generally more basic.

Loyalty Landscape

Major international hotel groups such as Marriott, Hilton, and IHG maintain a significant footprint in the country, concentrated primarily in the capital and key commercial hubs. These brands form the core choice for high-end business travelers. Local independent hotels and small operators have less coverage within global loyalty programs.

Trip preparation

Health

Use careful food and water habits; standards vary and rural/trekking settings raise risk. Mosquito-borne illnesses are important: CDC lists malaria risk throughout PNG below 2,000 m, plus dengue, Zika and Ross River virus, so use bite prevention. Plan for heat, UV, heavy rain/floodwater, and altitude/cool nights in the Highlands; medical care can be limited outside major towns.

Vaccinations

Consult a doctor or travel clinic at least a month before travel. Be up to date on routine vaccines, including MMR, polio, flu, varicella, Tdap, shingles as appropriate, and COVID-19. CDC recommends hepatitis A, hepatitis B and typhoid for PNG; polio vaccination/booster may be relevant because poliovirus has been identified in the past year. Discuss Japanese encephalitis for long stays/rural/outdoor travel, rabies pre-exposure for higher-risk animal exposure or remote travel, and malaria prevention medicines. Yellow-fever vaccine is not recommended for PNG itself, but a certificate is required for travelers age 1+ arriving from yellow-fever-risk countries, including >12-hour transits.

eSIM / connectivity

eSIM is available but not universally frictionless. Vodafone PNG officially offers eSIM for compatible phones/tablets, but says activation is done in person at retail/flagship outlets with ID and cannot be purchased before arrival. For local connectivity, check prepaid/mobile data from Vodafone PNG, Digicel PNG and Telikom/bmobile; coverage is best in towns and along main corridors, and can be patchy in islands, mountains and villages. No clear official tourist eSIM product was found; a physical local SIM may still be the simpler fallback.

Health/vaccine info is reference only, not medical advice — consult a doctor or travel clinic; defer to CDC/WHO and official sources (as of 2026-07-13).
